Outback rear skid plates?

I've been clumsy on a couple of occasions and have damaged the rear bumper on my 2007 Outback. A skid plate in back seems like it might protect against this body damage, but I don't know if it's even possible to install such a thing. Any advice?

I have done the same in my 2001 Forester. On the last occasion I nearly ripped the whole bumper off. I have 2 cracks in it from it getting caught. One going all the way up to the tailgate :censored::censored: And YES I have a tow bar but it doesnt help, much. I am in the process of working on a rear replacement bumper (~$1000) which is 1/4 of the price of the Subaxtreme one and to get it to W.A and installed. When I get paid next im making a trip to Bunning, I have an idea to create a kind of rear sump guard that will protected it from getting caught, ripped and damaged. It will only get scrapped then. I will let you know how it goes, I have had the idea a few weeks but after spending $1000 on new tyres I didnt really have the money spare.

Haven't seen such a thing yet, you may have to be the pioneer. I would think some of the tow bars out there would help, then you also have a rear recovery point.:)

Scooby, that looks like it would be strong and withhold a few beatings but it would be illegal in Australia, we have quite strict rules on what we can and cant do with modifying our cars. If someone did try it you would also need an engineering certificate to approve it, which is $1000 odd bucks :madred: Thats also the reason why we cant go more than a 2" lift from standard height without an engineering certificate.
 
Thanks for the info. I'm in Southern California, so vehicle mod rules are pretty liberal. I do have a 2" receiver hitch which grinds regularly, but it doesn't protect the corners, which is where I've done the damage.

I'll ask some of the companies that make the front skid plates if they think that it's possible. I'm a currently underemployed mechanical engineer, so maybe I could trade them a design for a custom fabrication.

Try Paul at www.get-primitive.com . He does front and rear skidplates for cars..
