I heard on the news today that there was another big cyclone hitting in the Queensland area. Is this the time of year you guys see these?

Yes, it is cyclone season. But this cyclone is unprecedented on the east coast. With wind speeds of 300km/h or more, it has a front of some 500km's. That is the difference with this cyclone. Just the eye of the cyclone alone is greater than the whole of Cyclone Tracy. It could take over 3 hours for the eye of the cyclone to pass before the second half hits. That is huge. It had been a very harsh summer for us. Floods and bushfires in Victoria and NSW, floods in SA and Tassie, bushfires and cyclones in WA and floods and cyclones in Queensland.

It is a monster! hang tough everyone in Qld and stay safe

This cyclone is bigger than huge, it's absolutly massive to say the least. It's been classified as a catagory 5 & thats as high as it gets.

They are saying that when the first front hits it will last for about 10 hours, followed by the eye that could be for about 3 hours then the second half which could be for another 10 hours. So yes it's going be a very anxious time.

My thoughts are with the people in Qld. Be safe & stay safe.

My daughters working in Townsville hospital tonight its going to be a long night.

Stay safe Queenslanders the mother of all cyclones is about to hit. Will make Tracy look like a breeze

Cat5 300k winds due to touch down 11pm.

All the best to anyone in FNQ.

3 births - no deaths reported so far! Amazing! Seems everyone was so well prepared for the largest cyclone ever to hit down-under and it stepped inbetween the major towns, So so lucky!

Well done to everyone up there, for being so well prepared. Well done to Premier Bligh yet again on doing such a great job. But there are 2 chinks in her armour. It's not just Queenslanders coming to help- we all are. And for being the only state not to have insurance for infrastructure- shame on you Premier Bligh for relying on the rest of us to pay for repairs because you did not wish to pay for insurance. You (and not the average Queenslander) are bludging off the rest of us and that is very poor form. But mostly I'm delighted no one has been killed. That is a miracle

I think that after seeing all the devastation of the recent floods, people didn't need to be asked twice, they weren't going to take that chance.
So yes, well done to everyone in Qld for being so well prepared.

Yes I agree that it was a miracle in itself that nobody was killed.
There are two people unaccounted for & missing however. Lets hope that they are safe & just seeking refuge at another location out of harms way.

Glad everyone is OK!!! A little bit of being prepared for the worst goes a long way. Did the storm do a lot of damage???

Yes, but less than expected- many of the buildings are built to withstand cyclones- although nothing is designed to withstand 300km/h winds. Somehow it slipped between the major centres such as Cairns and Townsville, but Tully, Innisfail and smaller towns and villages are a real disaster. Massive damage to crops as this is prime agricultural land- and they were still recovering from Cyclone Larry 5 or so years ago.

What happened to Queensland? Some rather lame journo, with little inclination to do much in the way of accurate reporting or research, has renamed a rather ugly town in Tasmania Queensland, and believes a tropical cyclone could make it that far south.

I know it's a bit out of date, but worth a laugh anyway.
