First off, I know this isn't offroad ... but this will probably be the only track day this vehicle see's that involves pavement, so think of it as a "Farewell to Asphalt" thread :raz:

I am a member of a local'ish forum, AWDpirates, and this past weekend a group of us went to High Plains Raceway for a winter Lap Day. This was my first time out on a track with the forester and I had a blast.

Currently, she is stage2 w/ a protune, Hawk HPS & Centric rotors, Subaru Super Blue in the brake lines and the suspension is bone stock other than the addition of some rear subframe bolts. I am on the stock 16's with Michelin Pilot Exalto AS's. It's safe to say that it's far from the optimum set up and most would probably choose not to bring it out for a track day, but I wanted to have some fun with her and get to know the car a little better. Besides, this track is sick and has some elevation changes.

I talked a few friends into coming along:
BJingles - a member on subaruforester.org w/ an 08 FXT. Perrin sways F&R, Swift Springs, Kartboy endlinks, VF turbo swap w/ STi top mount running Cobb OTS map.

Ben - who brought his Outback XT w/ whiteline F&R sways.

When we showed up, we were the first of the subie group and saw nothing but corvettes, porches, bimmers, etc. All unloading track wheels/tires, fuel, jacks, etc. We claimed our spot in the paddock area and unloaded our camp chairs, hibachi's and coolers. Eventually the other subie owners showed up and we all huddled in the same area. Bjingles and myself were the only two foresters there and everyone else, except for Ben, was driving sti's and wrx's. So we had a few chuckles and went for the safety meeting.

Usually they run in groups: slow, medium, fast. But that wasnt the case this time. They simply opened up the track from 10am - 4pm and you got on and off as you pleased. Gentleman's rules apply here. Pass safely, where you can. You may signal a pass, but overall it was understood that you maintain the line and it is up to the overtaking car to go around you.

So here are a few pics:

Short video shot by my friend doing a Ride-Along.

Notice the mad amounts of tire squeal and my "Hawaiian G-Meter". While these tires are not really meant for a track, I have to say they are extremely predictable and really surprised me for what they are. They wore a little, but nowhere near as much as I thought they would.

Now that I got that out of my system, once these tires wear out (probably spring), I will swap on the AT's and do it dirty at the rallycross. I have my eye's on a set of General Grabber's.

It's always a worry when they let cars of different performance levels out on the track at a time. Worst example I saw was at Eastern Creek Raceway, where the main straight is 1km long. Coming up toward the left hand curve is a NA Impreza. Looming up behind him is nothing less than......

A Ferrari F1 car! I think if I was in the Impreza I'd be wetting myself! The Ferrari just looked awesome on the track. Sounded pretty good too. But I thought it was stupid as there is no way the impreza driver would see the Ferrari if it went up the inside. Obviously this private test day has considerably different rules than the rules our club has to operate under.

This was mentioned elsewhere and for the most part, I agree. We totally thought we would be running in groups, but there really weren't a whole lot of people on the track at any given time and everyone spaced themselves out really well. There were really no issues at all.
