Hi guys. About an hour and a half ago it was a nice hot sunny day with little wind. I went to the one of the local shopping centres where Woolworths (Safeway) and all the major shops are. Half waythrough my shopping the powere flickers, then just before it goes out everyone is asked to evacuate the shopping centre due to a cyclone hitting Geraldton (in Western Asutralia). Everyone makes there way though multiple exits to find ourselves in the middle of a cyclone. Wind, rain, trees on the road, no power, a few cars in car park are crushed due to poles and trees falling on them. As I made my way to my Forester I started to feel a bit scared as im 17 and living alone at the moment. Then a mate of mine called to say that their fence has been blown down and the pump house to their pool is gone.

I asked to help secure his house as it is still being built and stuff is everywhere and not complete but he insisted that I come home and make sure my own house is alright. This brings me to now. Just thought I would share with you all. I will get some photos when I venture out of my house again.

Its a big deal for a small city of 35,000 people.

Haha, we're here in Tornado Alley and when a tornado hits, they usually lock us inside, not kick us out :rotfl:

Well.... What do you guys consider a cyclone? More flooding than wind and hail? I may be going down the wrong road here...

Wow taza thats not good to hear. Glad that you're ok.
Be safe mate & stay safe.

Regards
Mr Turbo

The worst of it is over now. Just quite a bit of wind and rain still.

I havnt been in anything like that before so it felt different. Wasnt too bad but very unusual for where I live, especially this time of the year. And suprisingly yesterday it was over 40c degree, hot and dry (like normal).

we're bracing for it in Perth , should hit us sometime Sunday
hopefully it fizzles out by the time it reaches us

I saw it approaching on the news last night and thought it was a long way south for a cyclone- but it does happen- as we have just seen. Don't think I've ever heard of one as far south as Albany though. What category cyclone is it?

you can see from the pic it was a cat3 at Geraldton and declining to a cat1 by the time it hits Perth

3pm and the rain is bucketing down now but the wind is not that strong

Apparently 2 cyclones are headed for... Queensland. Poor buggers.

A cyclone is a hurricane that swirls the opposite way I think, massive winds with an eye in the center that is deadly eerie then massive winds in the opposite direction, I've been in a few when I was younger, about Taza's age up in Port Hedland, quite scary but exciting at the same time, standing next to the beach almost laying down as the wind holds you up.
A workmates lunatic son decided to go surfing in one while I was there......never saw him again but we always got a few days off work to clean up the town so that was good and any cars parked near the beach were always sandblasted perfectly clean with nice frosted windows.....but only on one side lol.

Geeze...more crazy weather for y'all. Hope everyone manages to stay out of harms way. Are you into your 'normal' cyclone season???

Yes. Our worst cyclone would have been Cyclone Tracy which struck Darwin on Christmas Day 1974. Destroyed the city. That was the same year as the last big Brisbane floods.

Thankfully they seem to lose intensity quickly once they hit land, don't travel far inland like US tornados. (But that is small comfort if you live on the coast!)
Stay safe all of you 'westies'!

Was just a bit damp in the city but I think Northam York copped it pretty hard, last one we had reach this far south with any force was in 1978, I was in Northampton near Taza & luckily I'd just moved as it lifted the house I was living in and dumped it in a paddock, idiots who built it the year before didn't think it was necessary to bolt it to the concrete pad lol

"Hurricane" I think is how you guys refer to this type of storm.

Once they get that far south I guess that's what happens. And probably also why you rarely see them there too.
