Vibration at lwo revs after clutch/flywheel replacement

Morning all,

My MY03 XS has done 130k. It recently came to a standstill as the clutch thrust bearing failed. Got a new dakin speedy clutch installed and they also replaced the flywheel as apparently there has been many problems with the dual mass flywheels.

The new clutch is much lighter than the previous one - much easier to drive. The only problem is now I am getting more vibration at low revs and acceleration. Between 1200 and 1700 rpm with foot on the gas the whole car vibrates. You generally don't drive this low in rpm, it's only occasionally when you are in too high a gear you notice it. Took it back to the mechanic and they said it was normal for cars to shudder at too low revs when the engine is straining. Explained it didn't do this before and they responded that it is a different clutch/flywheel so will behave differently.

I'm not that happy with this vibration - I probably wouldn't buy a car with it. My mazda doesn't do it. Any advice - does anyone elses Forester have this after DMF replacement? It's different to the normal forester low rpm clutch shudder, it's like the car's natural resonance.

Cheers,

Tom

Hi Tom,

It would assist if you let us know where you are. While you say what revs this occurs in, what gear are you in- or is it in all gears? What perenage of throttle are you applying?

Thanks for the reply. I'm in Sydney, Australia.

Vibration occurs in all gears. Any more than 50% throttle and you are in the vibration zone.

Cheers,

Tom

Might be worth taking it to a Subaru specialist & get a written report then take it back if there is a problem.
There were 3 TomH's in my family, my old man (gone) me and my son & if he ever has a son it'll be another.
Good luck with the clutch.

A mate of mine is a Subaru specialist. Give him a call on 0418 648 105. He should be able to set you straight

Great thanks for the referral will do.

Thanks for the update - I have exactly the same clutch, same vibration and paid the same price for it. Reassurance that this is a normal noise is good.

Guess maybe this is why subaru had a complicated set-up - maybe they needed the DMF to dampen the vibration.

If I get anywhere I'll post improvement.

Earlier Subarus- and the 6 speed- use a normal flywheel with no issues. I know the DMF flywheel has had issues, and is the exception to the normal rule where factory is best. One thing that has surfaced is that even though the aftermarket claim it is an exact replacement part, there can be differences- such as the springs.
