Well I will start from the begining. Here is a bit of my life just before we begin. Well im 17 I have just gotten off my red P-Plates and on to my Green ones. I have been driving for just over 6 months in my 2001 Forester M/T which I love very much. I Love driving it on and off the road. I just got a job at a school as an ICT Services Officer and I started this week. I finished work friday and drove home to Kalbarri in Western Australia for Christmas and to see my family. Anyway, had a good morning with the family, great food, got some new clothes, new stereo in my car. So im in a fantastic mood.

The Murchision river has started flowing brown from all the rain up north, including the blocked off roads to Carnarvon. So I though I would go for a drive up to Manara hill to go and see how much of the ocean is brown from it flowing out the mouth. To get there you go on the highway inland for about 5km out of town then up a gravel road which is 3km or so. Now since I have had my green P-Plates (a few weeks) I decided to make an early new years resolution which was to slow down my driving style, stop speeding so much and just be more a normal driver(no redlining the rev counter every gear change). Well I can say so far I have succeeded in this. Anyway on the way back down I was going about 40-50km/hr, just taking it easy or so I thought because I know how easy it is to slide on gravel. As coming down to a bend which is on the declining hill I braked slightly, but not enough. The back slid out so I tried to counter steer but over countered it and the car fish talled. I went into a gravel heap then continued into a dead bush/tree. I was shacking, I havnt been in a crash before and was worried what the damage was.
Now your probably all thinking that im inexperienced and young. I am probably one of the most experienced drivers around for my age. I have been driving since I was a kid and in the past 6 months have done over 20,000km in my Subi. A mix of city, country, highway and offroad driving. I live and drive between 2 towns every week so there is a lot of highway driving there and I have had a few near misses with Kangaroos and sheep on the roads. I am nowhere near as experenced as people who have been driving for 20 years or so but for my age I am.
I was shaking so I just sat there for a minute or 2 sweating like hell in my car. I got out to look at the damage expecting the bumper to be ripped off, dents, scratches, the lot really. I was lucky the air bags didnt go off. As I walked around to the front and side of the the car I saw that the bumper, grille, bonet, whole paggengers side of the car (including windows, paint, plastics, rims) were all badly scratched. No dents luckily, just badly scratched all over. I tried reversing out but was stuck, nearly bottomed out. I was almost in tears, but managed to keep it together. I can now say the car was in excellent condition when I got it. :rotfl:I put it in low range and slowly rocked the car out, after about 10mins she reversed out. I called up my parents and told them what happened, they asked if I was alright which I was. I slowly made my way home and havnt really looked at the car since.
It hasnt put me off driving but it has been an experience I never want to have again. At the time when the car slid I was worried about it rolling but that didnt happen. Least I was and still am in a Subaru if anything else does ever happen.

I thought I should share this with you all.

Oh and here are some photos, they were taken on my phone and you cant see anywhere near all the scratches but it does give you a rough idea.

what a freakin bummer, dude! Atleast it was only scratches you'll have to deal with on this one... Maybe your prarents had enough time afterwards to run to a body shop & pick a gift certificate for a paint job. Careful out there & try to enjoy Christmas!

Sorry to hear about the misfortune with your Subi.
Cars & things can be fixed, but people can't.
Glad that you're ok. :)

Regards
Mr Turbo

Good pick up on the possibly bald rear tyre. If the tyre is ok, then incidents like these can be good to remind us all we have, and most likely will in the future, made mistakes. The good bit is that it was minor and you were unhurt. If the tyre was bad, that can serve as a reminder too for different reasons. Pleased you are ok, and a good effort getting the car out too.

The back tires are nearly bald. But I dont have enough money for new tires at the present time. Im waiting to get paid then I will. The front ones only have about another 8000km out of them to. They are not as bad as they look in the picture though, there are still a few 1000kms I can get from them. I have hosed the car off and the damage isnt too bad. Lots of scratches, mainly on the plastics but a few bad ones on the paint. Least im alright and now I no to take even more care on the gravel.

I also broke the flog light protector too, on the left side. But I guess thats what its there for, to protect the fog light.

How does touch up paint look? has anyone tried it at all? A body shop isnt really possible at the moment but im willing to give her a good polish and maybe a touch up on some of the deep scratches.

This is an American video someone sent me regarding stopping distances on wet roads with different levels of tread depth. In Oz, minimum is 2 mm tread depth, but as you can see, things are not good even before then. Anyway, at least you know now why you had your accident.

In this video, the car with the camera in it is on near new tyres. The green car in front has the same tyres, but worn. The second blue car he catches is also on the same tyres, but also worn and is 4 seconds a lap slower as a result. As an aside, the green car has done 300,000km's on the one engine, and lots of track days

Sorry to hear about your misfortune taza - you are OK and that's the main thing! Just think of the scratches as battle-scars; mine has lots!

Just spent 4hours polishing the car and removing scratches with the help of my dad :) The plastics are the same but the paint work has come up well so im happy. I didnt have my sump guard on at the time due to maintance i was doing on the car the other day. The sump area has taken a beating but seems ok. Some parts of the exhuast are dented badly and scuffed with one guard hanging off (which I have removed). Bits of it may need replacing but for now are ok, so im happy. More experience under the belt now.

Glad your OK taza, that is the most important. Sounds like the Foz is buffing out alright, and if I were you I'd spend money on tires before body work. Safety before beauty. :iconwink:

^ yeah I know tires. Im just waiting for the next pay check to go through (2weeks from now) then I will get 2 on the front. Then another 2 in the pay check after that. Im looking at the Bridgestone Dueler 694 A/T in the standard size. Ive heard very good things about them. The tires that are on there now are Highway tires which probably doesnt help with all my offroading that I do. But i want to get the rest of the wear out of them before new ones if I can. The only A/T one is the spare which is still brand new(9 years old).

Glad she's comin clean for the most part! If it's the heat shields that you took off, i wouldn't sweat it. Most of mine have already been taken off because the bolts would rust and rattle like a mad dog. The dealerships tell you in order to replace them, you have to get a new exhaust system, so they just cut em off.

Tyres age even when they are not being used. I had a tyre that I used as a second spare on a trip I made to WA and NT. I'd already used the first spare, and when a rock shattered a light, which shattered and punctured the right front tyre, I put the 2nd spare on. It was a good brand, with plenty of tread left, but had been laying around for years. But some 60km out of Katherine, it delaminated leaving a huge bulge on the right hand tread of the tyre. It was like driving a pogo stick. Thing is, the rubber deteriorates over time. They go hard- so they have less traction, and as I found out, can fail.

You must be the only bloke I know of who gets paid by cheque!

In a long driving career accidents / near misses are an inevitability. You had already worked out the crucial variable prior to this - i.e. speed.
Even doing the right thing and experience won't always 'cut it' - radio report yesterday of a driver in his 80s who rolled his car and was killed the other night. He had swerved to avoid an on-coming car which was on the wrong side of the road.
What you have just gained is a bit more experience - in some situation down the track it will come back to assist you.

Hi taza. I just saw your post. I am glad your ok. You seem to have a lot of friends on the forum thinking of you which is great. I know what you mean about gravel roads, I do a lot of rogaining (cross country orienteering) and most of the access roads are gravel. They usually nice and flat(ish) and so is easy to travel at city speeds. Any way glad the scratches are buffing out.
