Robe Sand 4wd trip Jan 2011
G'day all
On ausubi we've been planning a sand 4wd trip for a good 7 months now - I couldn't make the initial dates so it was cancelled. Since then it has been resparked for January 2011.
Details as follows:
Friday the 21st of January to travel to Robe.
Leave either Monday the 24th of January OR Tuesday the 25th of January. This way it'll give everyone a day to settle in for Oz day if we leave on the Monday...
The way I'd see the itinerary work is like this:
Friday 21st: Travel to Robe, play on long beach if there's time (about 7 hours from Melbs)
Saturday 22nd: Tour around the Robe end of the Little Dip National Park to gain sand driving skills/test out vehicles
Sunday 23rd: Attempt Robe to Beachport (90km) via sand tracks. Group size will be the thing to slow us down. 2 vehicles did it in 5 hours last time, that was without trying either! We left at 1pm so there'd be plenty of time for an all day excursion.
Monday 24th: Either travel back home/to Oz day camp OR hang around and play in the sand for another day
Tuesday 25th: Either already home/camping for Oz day OR travelling home.
I'll be camping out on the Murray for Oz day so am keen to leave on the monday to make the most of the murray.
The things you WILL NEED:
Lift + larger tyres. While lift is good its the larger tyres that make the difference with the lift.
Cooling: ANY cooling issues or hints of overheating need to be well and truely sorted before we head out. The sand WILL always work your car hard and being January I'd be betting the weather will be hot as well. This combination will work the cooling system hard. So get those radiators checked/replaced and thermo fan upgrades you've planned finalised/installed.
While cooling systems may have been worked over there will most likely be times where we'll need to stop to cool down...
Other than that, the usual touring/camping equipment will be needed. And it will have to be tied down well so it doesn't bounce around in the sand.
Camping will most likely be at one of the caravan parks or a camp ground in the dunes depending on group size.
Let us know if you can make it
Cheers
Bennie
