I am planning a weekend in the snow in about 3 weeks. I haven't been down there for about 14 years and most trips I did when I was younger were whirlwind ski trips driving at night then staying in share accommodation and getting blotto every night.

Now I am older and wiser (ha - that's a laugh!) and I wish to know what else is down there....so this time I'm not skiing at all. I am going to be seeking quiet bush tracks with snow in the trees and vast open vistas etc. Do these exist?

Now, I've only got two days there and so far I want to check out the Alpine Way (Thredbo to Tumbarumba leg) and Tom Groggin. I could probably do these on the first day.

On the second day I might check out the powerstations and associated infrastructure for the first half of the day.

Does anyone know the area REALLY WELL? Can anyone suggest some spectacular tracks (off the beaten track off course) or areas of great beauty that I should visit?

If possible I'd like to drive through a snow-lined forest just like our friends over in the US who always submit spectacular winter pics..

Always open to suggestions....waypoints accepted too!

most tracks inside the Kosciusko will be closed. the Alpine Way will be closed from Thredbo onwards. I think you would be better going around to Lake Eucumbene and Old Adaminaby. haven't been offroading around there yet, but be very cautious and prepared. UHF, MAPS, SUPPLIES, RECOVERY GEAR and let someone know your exact planned route. i can help with digital maps if you like. just PM me. have fun :)

They tend to close a lot of the roads in winter - certainly closing the Alpine Way shuts out a lot of interesting terrain.

Not sure if there is much available in the way of snow covered roads - unless the snow comes down to say 1100m

Let us know how you go and if you find any interesting areas.

It's a bit unfortunate that a lot of the most scenic tracks are shut/impassable during Winter. Certainly you could do Thredbo->Murray 1 Power Station-Khancoban-Tumba route.

You could then do Tumba to Cabramurra via the Elliot Way (unfortunately there are no tours of T1 or T2 underground power stations anymore), then if you want a bit of dirt and windy, head to Adaminaby and take the back road to Canberra.

When the Khancoban-Cabramurra road is open, a visit to Black Jack Fire Tower is a very nice drive, and there is a fantastic view.

It's very nice up around Cabramurra/Kiandra at the moment, very good cover of snow (despite a LOT of rain a few weeks ago). Head up to the Radio Tower at Cabra for a good view back North along the valleys towards Talbingo/Tumut.

Cheers
