Just wondering how many of you have non-standard exhaust systems on you car?

Also if you could please let me know:
1) 2.0L, 2.5L or 3.0L?
2) Turbo or Naturally Aspirated?
3) Pipe Diameter and from which section of exhaust?
4) Stainless or Mild Steel?

I'm just so confused with all the options - just wanna know what has been done and what yields good or bad results.

Thanks dudes!

The Forrie is stock. The Impreza is a turbo. Bigger diamater generally means less ground clearance- my 3 inch TBE SS system is not good for offroading. With N/A, don't go too big as you lose torque. One of the WRX gurus I know reckons 3 inch from the turbo to the rear diff and 2 1/2 from the diff back is the gun option. So what does that say about getting overly keen for a non turbo! Mild steel is cheaper but SS lasts longer. Does that help?

I've got a 3" turbo back on my Sti powered Liberty, it added heaps of power and sounds great but cost nearly $2000 6yrs ago but you get what you pay for.
You can hear the liberty here.

On the offroader I have 3" turbo back to the diff then the standard very restrictive muffler, the only reason for leaving it on was it sits nice and high and wagons tend to reverberate inside with loud systems, I'll probably gut it one day.

I have been giving some consideration to just visiting a Subaru dealer and getting it fixed with a genuine factory part.

The only thing making me think aftermarket is that I have noticed that with the exhaust leak that there is less backpressure resulting in a more effective turbo. There is a definite noticeable improvement in response. Unless it's all psychological coz of the WRX rumble - haha!

It's a teeny bit addictive so I am just investigating the possibilities of improving flow.

MRT reckon theirs almost fits to the stock snugness, but at $1400 it's up there.

Maybe I'll just go to the muffler shop and have mine repaired....I dunno.

Holy crap dude that Lib absolutely hauls arse!

Jeez, it goes like the frikkin clappers!

I totally enjoyed watching that vid....that's it - I want an Sti engine in my Foz!

my first combo was stainless MRT 3" to a 2.5" STi muffler. Great for the street, looks and sounds stock. I had an upgraded turbo and tune done as well.
the STi diff back is for sale by the way ;)

Currently running same MRT dump and midpipe with 2.5" Cypher muffler. Louder than the STi but not so loud to attract cops or give you a headache. Oh this diff back is for sale too ;)

Coming up- replacing the diffback section with a 3" MRT muffler

As said previously a 3" system will scrape more offroad. I had my dump pipe heat wrapped but that got torn to shreds after a few offroading ventures :p

I do like the MRT's neatness. The quote they gave me was for 3" cat back. I am guessing that includes the 3" MRT muffler. I haven't heard it though.

The 2.5" STi muffler on the 3" pipe is a very enticing option. It's a shame the distance from me to you is the entire width of Australia - any idea how much freight might be?

A good 3" system should gain about 15% more power but depending on what year you have it may need a tune at the same time which will gain you another 15%> power, but most post 98 Subi's will need a tune so speak to MRT or whomever does your zorst, if not sure ask a Subi workshop because it can become expensive, luckily mine is 97 STI so it has a self learning computer.

I only found this tonight but if it's your muffler that's leaking I'd be tempted to chuck one of these cheapies on, thinking about getting one for the offroader

Hey, yeah that was a few years ago, it's a bit quicker now, pulled a 13.09 last time with a 26kph headwind, hopefully go back to the strip in the next few weeks & hit a high 12...........Then I'll be happy as it's stock apart from breathing mods.

I had a full MRT turbo back zorst which came with a magnaflow muffler on my Gen3
Liberty B4. Well and truely overpriced but the quality and sound was second to none.

NA EJ22 in L series

2 & a 1/4 inch cat back system with centre dog (they gave me a square looking muffler) and some sort of muffler out the back. Mild steel. $450.00

Basically after fitting the EJ then a 3 inch lift kit I went into this mob and asked for an exhaust that's tucked up neatly under the subi that also unleashes the subi rumble without giving me a headache while cruising around.

I'm happy with what I got, the EJ revs easier now, sounds great to me - but after hanging out with some of the ORS crew on the last snow trip I reckon it could be "refined" a little more as its raspy compared to some of the other exhaust setups I heard on that trip.

Also I refused to have a cannon muffler on my subi - too ricer for me + I HATE them, they're the worst looking muffler you can get! Every boy-wanna-be-racer has one, usually fitted so you can see the chrome from the front of the muffler all the way to the tip of the thing. :puke:

Cheers

I hate them too- but I guess since you do too you wouldm't be interested in the one I'm trying to sell!

i've got a 2 1/4 inch equal length tuned kit from head to tail. got it for $91 second hand on flea bay only 18 months old:biggrin:. cant tell you how it goes, hav'nt put it on yet:rotfl:Chrissie hols i'm putt'n everything in. will let you know then. it's from MRT

I have a 2.5 " mild steel system with custom headers on my L series with the 2.5DOHC. 2.5" high flow cat, 2.5" straight through oval shaped muffler. . My H6 Gen2 has a 2.5"(maybe 2 1/4) headers back stainless system, with high flow cat and offset oval muffler. H6 needs a bigger system, and i don't like the sound of stainless, sounds a bit tinny to me. Mild steel is cheap and does the job.

I ordered one of these bad boys for the offroader last night, we put a V2 STI RA computer in it the night before and it hauls arse but the standard muffler seems to be restricting it from the rest of the 3" system, I figured for $62 landed we'd give it a shot as it's nice and flat for clearance and looks so RICEY haha.

I hope you scratch the crap out of it  :p

When you said ricey I was expecting a 5" tip. That doesn't look bad at all.

Well it is uber shiny and it will probably rust out in 6 months but you can't really complain about the price & if it lets it breathe a little better without reverberating around the car I'll be a happy chappy, and I do miss the boxer rumble, everyone thinks it's a faker n/a.

I hope I scratch it too, it'll mean I'm actually using it lol.

Funny you should say that. Last night I was at a mates place, and this car was making enough noise to be heard. Mat mate says its probably an Impreza he has seen around. But he reckons that despite the bonnet scoop, STI rear wing and all the other stuff hanging off it, it is an NA because it is so slow

Then there was the time a bloke had an early Impreza- mid 90's- done up as a WRX. The thieves stole the car, thinking it was a WRX. They dumped it a few hundred metres down the road, obviously unimpressed.
