Hi all. First post.
I own a 2002 outback H6. It is making a severe clunking noise under the floor. I checked it out and the tailshaft/driveshaft (shaft from front to rear diff, not sure of specific name) has a fair bit of play in the centre bearing. I have been told that this bearing cant be replaced, that I can only buy the whole assembly for $1300.00. Has anyone else experienced this problem as my parts guy told me thay have had 3 enquiries about the same problem in the last 2 weeks.
Any help would be much appreciated.

Measure it and go to your local Subaru importer/wrecker, you'll probably find a Liberty/Legacy one will be identical and only a couple of hundred to replace it.

G'day Dangerjim & :welcome: to ORS.
Sorry I can't help much with the centre bearing issue that you're having, but I'm sure others will be able to help out though.

Regards

Howdy and :welcome:Dangerjim!!!

Make sure that bearing is the problem, there is probably a reason they can't be replaced, because they rarely, if ever fail. Could possibly be an unbalanced problem?

Are you sure its the centre bearing of the tail shaft and not a broken/dodgy gearbox mount?

As someone's already said, go to your local wrecker and grab a tail shaft from a liberty or the like. They should be the same.

My centre bearing on the L series can be pushed around quite a bit yet it still operates fine on the road at speed. The check would be to pull it out and see if there's any play/noise from the bearing when you move it by hand. If its noisy the bearing is dead, much like my wheel bearings at the moment

Cheers

sorry for bringing up a old thread, if its so hard and expensive to replace the centre bearing, would it be a waste of time to get a custome one peice tail shaft made up?

is there a centre bearing which is common to other cars (ie falcon/commodore) which would fit in place of this centre bearing? when i accelerate from stand still, i can hear knocking under (and behind) the drivers seat area. so im assuming that its the centre bearing, (it doesnt make any noise apart from initial (hard) take off

I have a complete tailsaft out of my Impreza I no longer need due to a gearbox conversion. Only done around 80,000k's- maybe a bit more. Excellent condition

do you know if it will be a straight swap into a 2000 model outback, mine is manual, aparently the auto tail shaft is different length, where in sydney are you? im in castle hill
