Thermo Fan issue

Hi All,

Now that is heating up in WA time to address this issue.

Both my thermo fans work when the aircon is running but if the A/C isn't on then neither are the fans.

This also happens once turned off.

The car doesn't overheat, at least not by the gauge, but having owned a car that overheated it certainly smells like it is.

What would a good course of action be? Replace the fuse relay's and the fuses, which are all intact or take it to the auto electrician?

Regards,

Rich

I hate to say it, but if your smelling coolant, might be time to get the head gaskets checked. Certainly check out the fan function they should run a/c on or not. Which car do you have?

i'd be inclined to drive with the aircon on regardless untill you get it to an aircon or
auto electrician.

Try another relay like the horn relay in the main fans socket and see if the fans work. If it does replace the relay. Also does the temp. gauge move at all if not check the temp sensor on the block plus check you Fuses first.
And run the AC if you have to drive it till it is fixed.

Thanks for the responses.

Its a 97 Forester.

The temp gauge works normally, ie when cold it indicates cold and then warms up as the car does.

I'll go try the relay.

I too have to agree about running the A/C all the time, until you get it checked out by an auto electrician. At least that way you know that the fans are going.
The last thing you want (or need) is for your car to overheat.

Checked the relay fuses and all are fine.

A/C is always on and I'll leave the fans running to help the car cool down. Off to the sparkie I go.

Went to a mechanic today and it turns out the fans to work. Slightly dicky switch controlling them which is replaced now and they are working great!

Also scored a free dash and some parts he was getting rid of.
