CV Joints generally

Hi all,

Quick question, and hopefully a simple one.

I've got a bit of grease on the inside of my front CV's - actually on the axle, where the rubber seal meets the axle. It's just a ring of thick grease that doesn't drip or appear to move, but if I wipe it off, it reappears within 24hrs.

I have a feeling I've read somewhere that CV's tend to force a bit of grease out on the inside, thus preventing any sand/grit from getting in (as the seal will never be perfect). Is there any truth to this, or are my CVs leaking?

Sorry if I'm being paranoid, it's just that after I got my lift put in, the guys told me to watch the CVs for leaks as that is where the stress would be...

Cheers,
Alex

Maybe the seal has blown. Either way, get it fixed soon before they run out of grease. A cheap repair could become an expensive one

I don't believe they're supposed to let out that much grease...maybe very small almost invisible amounts, but if that much grease is oozing out it won't be long before your CV joints get pretty dry and start knockknockknocking.

I could be absolutely wrong, I don't know.

I did actually get them repaired on Friday. It was simply a case of the little clamp not being tight enough, so all that had to be done was put a bit more grease in and replace the clamp with a better one. It had actually just started to spin grease off on the morning that I took it in: Prevention beats cure, every time.
