G'day again, again...
I've seen an EJ20 Turbo up for sale, the turbo has "blown up" and the engine has lost compression in one cylinder.
Any guesses on how repairable this engine might be?
Obviously this is one of those "how long is a piece of string" type questions, but if anyone has sucked turbo bits into their engine and knows what the result was for them I'd love to hear from you!
I'm guessing ring/piston damage or if really lucky only valve damage.
The engine has forged pistons if that matters to anyone.
Cheers,

It could have scored cylinders too those type of engines are always sus
Sounds like it was thrashed
It would cost plenty to fix at a guess
If you want a turbo motor get a half cut that way it comes with a loom ecu cross member and what ever else you can use

If anything has been sucked into the engine then it needs a complete rebuild. Even the smallest metal particles will cause major issues, especially with the crank bearings.

Steer clear unless you are willing to have the block torn apart and rebuild from the ground up, most likely including honing the cylinders to repair any scoring on the cylinder walls.

In other words...not worth it. I'd only buy a damaged block if I was already planning on a complete bottom end rebuild. (ie: dropping in stronger conrods, pistons, race bearings etc)

I second that.. Not worth mucking around with it unless your gonna complete rebuild the engine.

Thanks for the reality check!

Cheers guys,
I guess I'm just getting a bit too excited about my little subaru!
Decided I'll stick with the EA82T and do something silly to an outback or forester one day.
Thanks for the level headed advice, I would have done the full rebuild if I did buy it but really shouldn't waste my time. I was only tempted because it is dirt cheap (cheaper than just a block!), but without the loom, ecu, etc it would probably just be a huge headache to deal with.
Much appreciated,
Tim.

Wise choice. The only time I'd buy a engine block that has some kind of damage/issue would be if it was a very strong block with lots of potential. Some Subaru blocks are far better than others.
