Hi guys, my 02 started to make the strangest noise I was wondering if anyone has heard something like this before.

On down changing into 2nd and 1st on releasing the clutch I get a wherring/whining noise. Doesn't happen every change. Only when the clutch is depressed.

What is going on?

Could be the thrust bearing for the clutch. The thrust bearing is held by a "fork" that pushes against the clutch to disengage it, so it operates only when the pedal is depressed. If the bearing is shot it will make a noise.

Only had the car since Feb. Has done a few kays though so it will require changing sometime soon. Is a thrust bearing something to attempt yourself? Do you require specialist tools?

Throw out bearing - i second that..

Its pretty much a gearbox job, gearbox has to be removed to access. No special tools required, just gearbox jack or remove engine with gearbox attached, whatever is easier for me. (My option is remove the gearbox from under) While your in that area, you should change the clutch, spigot bearing (6201RS bearing) in the flywheel.

You people talk funny :P

Yes to get to it you have to drop the transmission, ao may as well do the clutch while you are there. So you may as well replace the throwout (or clutch release bearing), pilot bearing (in the flywheel) clutch disc and pressure plate. Very important to replace the two spring clips that hold the throw out bearing on the clutch fork. They do not come in a clutch kit but really should.

 The workshop manual calls it the "release bearing" and "release lever" :iconwink:

But then, they talk funny too!

It's a bit like tools, same thing has numerous names. If the box is out, just check the input shaft bearings as well. Might be in the gearbox, but hopefully just the throw out bearing.

I took it to subaru for their opinion today. They agree with you guys. Because it is only just happening and intermitant, they said wait til it gets worse. Will more than likely need a clutch at the same time. Kind of good news I guess, at least it is not going to blow up. Plus I get a chance to save for the repairs. Thanks for your help.

Took my car on to the freeway for the first time- looks like the rear diff has a whine in it, but these things are hard to trace. Definitely somewhere in the driveline. Should be able to fix it under warranty I hope

Already thought about that, but warranty means i leave it to them
