making a car awning from a rollerblind?

The neighbours are changing their curtains and I was thinking of retrieving one of their roller blinds to make a car awning

has anyone done this before?

I think the problem is that most roller blinds these days have a cardboard'ish centre tube. Even if it's wood you'd have to keep it out of the wet. If it's metal you should be OK.
