Okay so I am leaving for college soon and really need to know what is going on, anyway the issue I am having is the unlock and lock remote I have for my '99 Outback legacy has periods were it doesn't want to work. Like I keep spamming the button and it takes forever to respond (I'll be standing next to it). Now I know I am hitting the button and the light indicator on the remote is turning red. It ususally is when I try to unlock, but all sometimes locking. If I can remember right it gives me more problems when I havn't used it since like the day before. Is it the remote or the car? (I think I have an electronic issue as when I park the car and go to roll up the windows I see my headlights dim and with my interior lights if their on)

Are the batteries in the remote OK? How's the battery in your car? Do you have any transmission towers nearby? Have you tried to hold the remote against your chin to see if it works any better?

Man I am not sure if it's the battery in the remote, as for the battery in the car it has only shown a small trace and that is some days it seems like forever to turn over on start up. I mean I do have that dimming light issue. As for the chin thing I am confused and the transmission tower probably not the issue as sometimes it gives me issues then in the same spor it's fine

OK, the "chin thing" helps to transmit the signal. Hold it against your chin and press the button. So are you saying you do have a transmission tower nearby? If so, then that may be the answer to your problem. There is an area I visit sometimes that has TV transmission towers nearby; my remote just does not work at all.

no the transmission tower wouldn't be the problem cause I will be in the same place sometimes it works with no problem other times it works fine. But yeah I want to say it's the remote battery but the red indicator keep coming on and now it doesn't seem to have any problems (knock on wood it will give me issues tonight)

If it works after the key has been in your pocket for a while (ie, it is warm), but doesn't work when it is cold, then it is probably the remote battery. The red light will still come on, even if the battery doesn't have sufficient voltage to provide enough power for the radio transmission. They are usually CR2032 batteries or something similar - for $5 you could just replace the battery and see if that helps.

Hmm that might be it, I was told that when the car was bought from the mechanics (long story but Inca Motors is amazing) the batter was replace I might have to give them a call to see if they remember (that was also less then a year ago)

I had the remote key problem once, and the car battery seemed to be the problem. Replaced car battery and problem solved.

Makes sense I guess: the car battery needs a bit of kick in it to operate the solenoids for central locking.
