does anybody now how to do this for a 2002 outback, i changed the battery and now it doesnt work, ive trid searching but it wont search "key" cos its 3 letters and under.

You will need to take it to automotive locksmith to help you with this, they'll be able to 'program' it.

was it working before you changed the battery? i've changed heaps of batterys on both mine and all is good. also are you sure its not a dud battery?

lol yeh i checked that..... it was the wrong way, but i turned it round and it still doesnt work

it might be worth the $5 and buy another battery from a different shop before you go to a locksmith. just incase.

I've changed my key battery a few times & never had any dramas. 
I'd say that Eden's right on the money by guessing that you got a dud battery. :iconwink:

I'd go to a proper battery shop / photography shop. Supermarkets, etc can have low turnover and batteries can be out of date by the time you buy them.
The battery shop in Geelong tested both the old & new battery and fitted for no charge. I brought a second battery for the spare key as well.
