First things first,
Does anyone know if it is legal in Aus to set up indicators to operate as day running lights?

If so I am thinking of doing the following:

 1. Converting all 6 indicators to amber LEDs (presumably this will also require ballasts to be fitted); :bcool:
 2. Fitting a kit to operate the indicators as Day Running Lights, when not indicating. :bling:
This will have the added advantage of allowing the park lights to last a lot longer than if they were used as day running lights, however I will probably replace them with LEDs as well, so that they can be left on over night without flattening the battery.

All in all, a mod that will both improve safety and also be 'way '!

As per my question at the start of the post, is this legal?

Equally important, would it work, or have I missed something really obvious why I shouldn't?

I have my doubts but the best bet would be to contact VicRoads as it will most likely affect the ADR's, as how would people know when you are turning? You could put diodes in so only the fronts would be affected, but the same problem would arise, unless you use a different circuit. Trucks do something similar, but then they have separate indicators.

Rally,
Came across these kits on Daniel Stern's site: https://www.danielsternlighting.com/products/products.html

Now! First-quality WEP daytime running light control module
For retrofit or replacement:

"Maybe you want your vehicle to have daytime running lights for added safety. Maybe you're importing a car to Canada where DRLs are required. Perhaps your original-equipment module has failed, or you're tired of replacing costly headlight bulbs that burn all day long and die too often, or you ve had to disable the factory headlamp-based DRLs to upgrade the headlight wiring. Whatever the reason, if you want to add or keep a daytime running light function on your vehicle, the best implementation is the full-time operation of the front turn signals (except, of course, when they are operating as signals). This durable, highly efficient American-made module does exactly that.

Directional signals produce a wide-angle light distribution, are generally well located for DRL service, consume considerably less power than any headlamp-based DRL implementation, use light sources of much longer life than any headlamp bulb, do not encourage improper nighttime use of lights, and do not require additional lighting devices to be added. Many Cadillacs, Chrysler products, Chevrolet/GMC large vans and minivans, some Toyota and Lexus models, certain new Lincolns and assorted other vehicles use this implementation. When the engine's running, the bright amber front turn signals—not the dim front parking lamps—illuminate steadily. Normal turn signal operation is not changed or hindered. Turn signal DRLs comply with US and Canadian Motor Vehicle Safety Standards #108 and are approved in all states, provinces, and territories.

Installation is quick and easy; instructions are here. One module is needed per vehicle. Each module comes with needed connectors and supplies. $42.00/each

From what I can work out, all 4 ambers are permanently 'on', but when you activate the turn indicator the 'turn' side flashes and the 'other' side is turned off.

You are right though, I'll check with VicRoads.

For me, I just drive with my headlights switched on permanently. They are far more powerful/noticeable than most running lights, and are already installed so no cost. And with most Subarus, when you turn the engine off the lights turn off automatically, so no flat battery if you forget about turning them off. Just a thought.
