This message is copied from the introduction forum, but this is a better place for it:

I have a 2000 manual Outback, which I have had for about 6 years. I need some info about replacing my clutch. The car has done about 150,000 k and the clutch is now slipping. I've had a quote for about $2,200 to replace the dual plate clutch with a single plate unit which requires a new flywheel. Is this the best option? If anyone can point me to some info about the pros and cons of clutch options, I would be most appreciative.

Holy crap that's expensive!!! That's more than double what you should be paying to have a clutch replaced.

Go buy look for a clutch yourself and then take it to a competent mechanic.
You should not be paying more than $1000 all up.

holy crap that friggin price...

Some people have converted them from dual to single clutch - I dont know why dual - no idea why..
Clutch KIT (plate, pressure & bearing) for a good one is just under $220, flywheel.. no idea the price but there is heaps of them going around (second hand that is) and you can get it machined ready to install in yours - make sure you get the one without cracks.
Cheers
