Mit-subi-shi that is! (I still have the Foz)

Well it's time to fess up and as some of you already know (and as my sig has said since 30th April) I now have a new toy. A new Mitsubishi Triton GLX-R turbo diesel (aka L200 in Europe). It's capable of 2WD, AWD and 4WD (hi & lo; centre diff locked) - the feature is called "Super Select" and the AWD capability is the reason I settled on this vehicle when compared to the others in its class (HiLux, Navara, BT-50, etc). I have loved driving it in the rain lately; it doesn't put a foot wrong even if pushed (i.e. I can't power-slide it in the wet like the Foz!)

Here it is in virgin white:

Thought I'd get the first post up while the site is stable!

What do I like about it - Super Select / low range / offroad ability / finally a light in a lockable glove box / puddle lights / auto time out headlights / longer wheel base and much larger wheels = comfortable ride for long distance touring / much more space / larger carrying capacity blah blah etc.

It's surprisingly quick off the mark as well - a little lag and then the turbo kicks in; it surprised me and has since surprised many others in traffic :lildevil:

All I've done so far is add BFG AT rubber 26575R17 (AKA bloody big tyres) and I've ordered some rock sliders. Oh - and brought 4 extra wheels (well I only need one but they came as a set)

Long term this is to be my touring vehicle and I will take the tub off and put one of those bodies on the back with kitchen, shelving etc.

I think I've already said it but I'll say it again, congrats on the new set of wheels mate. :raz:
Now as they say.......let the mods begin

Regards
Mr Turbo

^ absolutely! If only it had a rear recovery point - I kid you not. It doesn't come with one and they're about $600 to buy from Mitsubishi

Nope, no tow bar. I want to firmly establish my plans for the rear end before adding anything as the replacement rear end will probably be shorter than the existing tub. I may be able to pick up a cheap tow bar from an earlier (shorter) model, because the tubs are interchangable, and that would give some protection underneath as well (probably can't tow anything though as the hitch point would be 200mm shorter - depending on the hitch)

Congrats Kevin!!! I like it. Like SuperRu said, Why cant we get something like that here, especially in a diesel?

Can't wait to hear/see it in action.:) So, are you going to be keeping the Foz???

Thanks guys! Yes, I'm keeping the Foz at the moment. It's currently having a heart transplant and front diff repair (2 broken teeth on the crown wheel). The engine, I'm told, was "a bit tired"

I know where you're coming from with the new vehicle... but I cant help feel like one of the original ANZACs just passed away.

Nice truck bro. Foz on carsale yet?

 Thanks. Still got the Foz; it's not for sale!

Thought I'd post an update to show how my big "Subi" looks now:

That is looking good!

Is it a strengthened canopy on the back to take the weight of the tent when in use?

Thanks BB and Carl. I'm pleased with the way it is turning out; more work to be done yet.

The canopy is moulded fiberglass (like a boat) and is very strong. Have a look a the strength challenge here: https://alpha.net/events_01.htm

Lookin' good

Yes, as a fibreglasser I can tell you FRP can be extremely strong, also resilient. Plus of course rust free. However, it will eventually lose strength with UV, even with UV resistant gelcoats. It also absorbs water if left immersed, a problem for boats but hopefully not canopies :rotfl:
