I have always found the Wilderness Society to be at the 'responsible' and 'considered' end of the environment movement.
(Having been back to Straughan in S. W. Tasmania a couple of years ago I was pleased that the Wilderness Society succeeded against the proposed Gordon below Franklin dam. Straughan is now a much more vibrant community than when I was previously there in 1981-82. Seems to me that we don't have too many wild rivers left on the east coast, so this one is therefore worth saving.)

The area is of great significance to me having been taken there by my parents regularly as a youngster....then as an adult I've kept visiting the area, in fact I'll be up there on the June long weekend.

There are some great drives around there, most of them are ideal Subie terrain.

I never really believe political spin from either major party. In Victoria 'new dams' is still the spin from the Libs - e.g. wanting another west of Geelong and also on the Maribyrnong, in northwest Melbourne. The reality is that both would be small, shallow, wide evaporation ponds rather than dams. However they appeal to a certain voter demographic, for much the same reasons as NSW Labor is accused of doing by O'Barrell.

All of this just emphasises the need for ordinary people like us, who vote across a number of electorates, to campaign to keep what few wild / remote outdoor places we have. So many have been lost since I was a teenager in the 1970's that I hate to think what it will be like in another 30-40 years when my son and daughter are my age and wants to take their respective kids to experience the Aussie outdoors.
 
Shift of thread location.

I'd like to suggest that the Mods move this thread to 'Outdoor Activities' and re-name it 'Environmental Campaigns - Australia' (Others could start similar for their own countries if they like.)
I think that would be a good 'fit', but other forum members please say if you think otherwise.
Would be a good place for those who are interested to 'dip in' to this stuff if they are interested.
In the spirit of this forum I think it would stay positive and friendly, rather than generate political heat - enough other forums for that.
