Curiosity and day dreaming is getting the better of me again. Has anyone converted their auto Subaru to run dual range? Can it be done?

Regards,

Joel

Well, it can be done but you will need to do your homework. Check the rear diff ratio may need to be changed, and there may be differences in tailshaft, starter motor and so on. You will need flywheel, clutch, pedal box, master and slave cylinder setup, hill holder if you're really keen, a switch for the clutch pedal back to the cruise control, different centre console, possible different speedo driven gear and possible speedo/odomoter correction. Or, you can just buy a car so fitted! Have fun. I've probably left something out as this was just off the top of my head.

Are you talking about keeping the auto box and adding a dual range, then no. I don't think it's possible.
Correct, apart from the fact that the 'innards' of both boxes are totally different (so presumably nowhere to fit the low range gear train) you would still need a clutch to change between high and low - unless only doing so while stationary, which would limit usefulness.

Oh, in that case not possible. It would seem I mis-understood your question.

Hummm, but what about getting the 4EAT out and fitting a 5MT with the low range?

I reckon that would be feasible, wouldn't it?

My concern in this case is if it can take the added torque the 2.5 turbo provides. Would one be breaking bits left, right and centre?

Cheers!

Thanks everyone for your help! I'm quite happy with the auto, I haven't needed Low range so far, but I was still wondering.

Joel

I know a bloke who had a dual range behind a turbo and it survived, even doing some motorkhanas (skidpans) and maybe even khanacrosses. Another alternative- albeit quite expensive, is to get a 6 speed box with the short ratios and final drive. I'm not sure of the ratios of any of the boxes, but if you are keen and did some homework you might be able to get something with a shorter first gear than what is available with the 5 speed. But you would still need to do all of what I said in my first post on this thread, but with a lot more $$$$$$$$$$$$$$. But gee it would be strong, and with access to better diffs as well.
