well, as the title says, its a very bitter sweet time for me. i just bought a 94 Ranger last week, and i love it. but if theres anything i love more, its my Legacy, the car that ive had since i was 14.
i am now faced with a dilema, i have 4 vehicles, i only drive 1. i would rather drive my Legacy off a cliff in a ball of fire than hand the keys over to some idiot that will just junk it when somethen goes wrong.

i think i will get rid of my Pug and 5spd Leggy and retire my first love to the barn, were she will sit until i find the time to work on her. i still want her to be my woods/camping car, its just not practical to tear up my daily all the time. but right now in stock form she is a marginal woods car at best, shes beats any 2wd truck, but just doesnt have the ground clearance to get any further.

94' Ranger, 4.0L, 5spd, manual t-case and hubs, 3" body lift

yup, im gonna start by seein if she can handle a welded rear. im hoping those CVs dont become toothpicks, solid axles handle them pretty well, but i dont know anyone with a welded CV.

but for the 5spd leggy, i think im gonna strip the drivetrain and suspension and junk the rest

Your rear end will handle the welded diff without a problem, the AWD centre diff won't though. I would not be surprised if after a short time the centre diff fries itself with daily driving. If you're only taking it off to slippery surfaces it will be fine IMO. Add larger tyres and you may reduce the life of the CV's, depending on their current condition.

Good luck busting out that diff. The liberty diff is a painful one to remove compared to an L series unit...

Toss the Ranger, work on the lib. Your back pocket will thank you for it in the long run ;)

Cheers

Bennie

the leggy is going to be a weekend warrior for now on, i am getting ready to start a job that will require about an 1 1/2 hour round trip to work and back and i just cant rely on it that much anymore let alone if i start modifing it.

if the tranny can take it, its gonna stay welded. cause i want to use it on the 4wheeler trails my truck is to big and shiny to go through and this car is going to see some serious 3 and maybe 2 wheel action so a locked rear end is a must.

Hi Bennie - What's your thinking here regarding the centre diff and viscous coupling not coping with a locked rear on firm surfaces? The locked rear diff will hardly affect the centre diff's operation. The rear CV joints would be my concern unless, like you have been doing, he removes one driveshaft for on-road driving.
