Hello

I finally bit the bullet and have spent the weekend changing my broken transmission over, but having finally got the new one in, it makes a bad noise going forwards in all gears and is fine in reverse.

My car is a 1999 non turbo 2 litre forester and I put a 1998 transmission in- should this be ok??

Original - has 4 bolt holes top and 4 on bottom

replacement- has 2 top (starter has a stud for bottom fixing) and 2 bottom

really would apreciate your help as I am stuck with no car at the moment. Not sure if box is broken, final drive ratio is wrong......... could always just go everywhere backwards..

thanks again

Tim

G'Day & Welcome Tim. I can't help but howabout you also post over on subaruforester.org as there is some excellent tranny knowledge over there.

Does the transmission still have its number sticker on the bell housing? This can tell you what the final ratio is by looking it up, might need someone who knows how to look up such things...

Although if its making some noise it could be a bad bearing. It just depends on the noise its making... Have you checked the oil level or replace the oil?

Cheers

If the final drive is wrong, then I would say you definitely have a problem, but it may also be the drop down gear at the back of the gearbox. Take the rear extension housing off, and you will see the drop down gear in the housing, mated to a shaft that goes into the centre of the gearbox (I've not seen this on a dual range box, only on a 6 speed, so this needs to be considered). Count the number of teeth on each gear and compare to what you had. Beware of oil- you may need to drain the box. Before that though- do you know if the 98 gearbox was good to start with?

So what's happened with this?

Cheers

Hi Guys

Sorry for not getting back sooner. I actually took the easy way out and got the guys who sold me the gearbox to send another one- turned out the first box they send was buggered. After another day fitting it, I now have a Forester that will stay in 5th gear and doesn't make a bad clonking noise on tight turns- result! So now have a 98 box in my 99 car, only difference is a few less holes to bolt it to the engine.

3 days after fitting it, took it for a 2000 mile trip through France on a fishing trip, so far so good...... except not catching anything
