Can the transmission of a subaru be set-up to run as a rear engine like a Volkswagon Beetle?

There are kits to actually mount subaru engines to VW transmissions. you cant use a subaru transmission unless you want 5 reverse gears. The traditional method of flipping the diff wont work in a sooby.

Its a common conversion to put a sooby engine in a VW vanagon.

For a WV Beetle with a subi trans AND a lift, you could try this: Fit an old-style kombi (split screen) transfer boxes to the rear end (ideally a '1968' independent suspension, AND re-insert the front tortion arms so as to lift the front end similarly!

Alternatively, fit the reduction boxes front AND rear, and work out how to rig the drive to the front.

The early kombi reduction boxes originated during WW2 on the 4WD 'Commanderwagen' Beetle.

A 'reprise' with Subi engine AND split range manual subi gearbox (especially the earlier ones with lower ratios) would be absolutely amazing!!!:biggrin::biggrin::biggrin::biggrin:

Actually, If you get a 2wd gearbox and do some grinding of some ribs in there, it would be possible. Good luck trying to find a 2wd gearbox in oz these days!

Also, a rear engined subaru IS an early rear engined VW - just take a look at an EA82 motor and gearbox...

Sorry, my bad. Thought with some work it would do the diff rotation trick...
