I did not mean to do it but am just about to buy an Aussieswag camper trailer. It's a 2002 model 'Classic'. Very good condition with lots of extras, treg hitch etc, Suit the subie down to the ground,580kgs tare,1000GVM. Paid $11,500 for it which i think is pretty good. The cheapest one they sell now starts at $37,000!!!!
Just looking into wiring for an 'Anderson' plug and a Tekonsha P3 brake controller unit. 2 quotes....$800 and $550.
I don't really need the Anderson plug yet and was wondering how hard it is to wire them up.:)

Is the intention to charge a battery in the trailer?

If so all you need is wire and crimp terminals and a battery isolator. A Redarc isolator will run you about $100 if you shop around. Wire of a good gauge say $4/m, can't recall now. Terminals about $1 each though you'll need the tool to crimp them. I've been told battery world generally has them and if you buy the terminals from them they'll crimp them for free.

As for wiring it up, mount the isolator somewhere. Run positive off the battery to the "in" of the isolator. The positive from the "out" of the isolator to the anderson plug (obviously routing as required). Run negative from the anderson to the chassis or for a better ground run it to the chassis and then from the same point back to the negative on the battery. Doing it this way gives you a good point at the rear for additional grounds. You could just run straight back to the battery.

That's it. $550 probably has $400 in labour in it so if you're willing to spend a day you can DIY and save yourself a fair bit.

Silver,
Have a look at https://myswag.org/forum/ .

Its a great site, with lots of info about camper trailers.

Have a look at the threads in the electrical section, and especially the sticky at the start of the section.

All in all myswag is to camper trailers what ors is to subis. :newmulti:

Thanks Barry. I am a member of myswag, and it is a great site, but just thought i would post here as somebody usually knows. Rushing around a bit at the moment.
I have not really made up my mind if i will keep the camper or have a go at selling it for a tidy profit yet. Either way i can't lose but i still have a year to go before i am really ready for my trip. I will see how it goes.

I'd keep it while you setup. My bet would be that if you get rid of it now, make your tidy profit, you'll be kicking yourself when you need it - as you probabily won't be picking one up for cheap. Its Murphy's law...

That's the way i am thinking really. I'll be back at my old address in Newstead Vic in about a month and my mate is really handy with mechanical things and i will have access to a garage full of tolls etc so i can set it up according to my needs.
You don't often come accross Aussieswags at a good price and it suits my car so well.
The major concern is the condition of the canvas but he told me he will show me how to set it up before i take it and my mates know him and tell me he is really nice bloke so all should be good.
One hassel is that it has a 6 stud pattern on the wheels, which is not really a problem in isolation, but the offset in OEM subaru wheels is so great that i am not sure if they will fit without rubbing on the inside of the trailer.
I want to have the same wheels on the car and the trailer as i think this makes sense.
My mate tells me i can get the offset reduced a bit if they don't fit but would need to make sure they still can fit on the car in an emergency.
Not really a major problem, just a bit of a balancing act.

Definitely shop around for wires. Repco wanted to charge me $16 per metre, whereas the same stuff was $5 per metre as Bursons where i have a trade account. And i paid $8 per metre for 255amp cable.

Silver,

When its time to crimp your anderson plug connectors, if you need a crimper let me know.

I'd enjoy an excuse to drive to Newstead. (Used to do it every day in the Beetle when there was still a council office in town.)

I'll send you a PM when i get settled in. Now i have, almost anyway, my camper i will take a few trips around the area. I want to go and catch some carp and do my bit for the Murray River! Maybe a trip to Victor Harbour in SA might be good also.
Prices!!! Bloody hell they vary. $800,$550 for the lot, $160 to fit, $130 to fit, $303 for the brake control unit,$249 for the same unit in the shop next door!!!
In the end i have settled on the local bloke up here at South West Rocks. Supply and fit the Tekonsha P3 brake control unit only = $330. That will do!!!! All going well i will pick up the camper on Friday morning.:raz::)
