Dropping pressure in tyres

I have a MY09 which is fitted with the standard Yokohama Geolander 225/55 R 17" road tyres. These are run at 31 psi (2.2 kg/cm) front and 30 psi (2.1 kg/cm) rear.

I want to get a more off-road suitable tyre without changing rims and believe that I can replace the standard tyres with Yokohama Geolander 225/60 17" ATS without any clearance problems.

Anyone used these tyres?. What pressures do you normally run them at?. What pressures do you run them when you air down for sand, etc?.

You will really like those tires, they are an excellent balance of on road manners and off road ability.

I am not sure about the size, but I know someone will chime in.

I run General Grabber AT2s, I've had them as low as 15psi for sand. We don't have any deep sand around here, never found a need to take them lower.

I've got them on mine and they are a great tire for moderate off road.
Done lots of sand and 15psi is good.

Yep, awesome tyres. I let mine down to 15psi for sand, and that real deep loose white stuff, never needed lower.
Used to run 20psi in the standard tyres for reference. The stronger sidewall requires a lot lower pressures, but once they belly out they are unreal.
At 20psi the stockos would were way better, but at 15psi the ATs were in a new league.

Hope that helps.

Yep, love the Yoko ATS. I would do the same as you with regard to tyres and size if I got an SH Forester with 17 inchers (one day...) even though the diameter increase of 55 to 60 profile is technically illegal in NSW, Australia. Where are you located? I run 34psi on the road and like others here find that 15 psi gives good results in soft sand. Never bothered airing down for trail driving but I believe it helps there too.

Firstly, g'day johnw33 & :welcome: to ORS.

As for airing down, 15-16psi for sand is a good pressure to be on.

Generally for offroading, I air down to 24-28psi (I'm at 36psi on the tar)
It just depends on how rough the terrain is that I'm travelling on.

I too use the Yoko ATS & love them.

Thanks for the advice. Very useful. Looks like people like the Yoko ATS.

That's funny i was about to ask a similar question and i saw this so might as well just hijack your post and expand on it. I have a 2009 forester as well and i went to 16" rims and 215/70R16 Grabber AT2. These are 1" larger in diameter and so far they feel good. I am going offroad in them this weekend so i was wondering what pressure you would recommend lowering them for just simple dirt roads where you will be going a little fast. I would imagine lowering the pressure a bit (obviously not as much as you do in sand) would smooth out the bumps a little bit. Maybe something like 25 psi or something like that? What do you think?
