Diesel Subaru

They're going to bring one to our club meeting Friday week for us to have a look.

I'm going to test drive it...

still thinking to get the Outback now...or maybe forester next year........

diesel Outback

Yep, I bought a diesel Outback. Had one ordered since Feb 09 and bought it purely on previous love of Subaru Liberty's and reports of how awesome the engine was in the UK. The car is better than expected and love it. Best car I've ever owned by far.

Have already done nearly 10,000km in it since 4th Nov and did lots of different driving to see what it does to the fuel economy. Found it is possible to achieve 1200km on the 65L tank, if you have patience to sit on 90-100km/hr, go 80km up hills etc... This works out to be around 5.4L/100km. But it is easy to achieve ~6.5L/100km with steady driving at the speed limits.

I took a 3.6L petrol for a drive and my 2L diesel is nippier and a much nicer drive. And on dirt, wow, this is just scary for a novice when you give it some stick. It grips and grips and slingshots like I have never been able to do even in my old Liberty's.

I reckon a test drive and you'd buy this car. But I would not get one to tow a caravan. The first gear is too tall and I reckon most people would quickly burn the clutch out. Needs a lower gear just for towing at take-offs if using a manual.

Welcome and congrats on the new OB!

We had one out on a trip with us recently and it performed very nicely. It was towing a T-Van.

G'day agronomy & :welcome: to ORS.

It sure did. :raz:
I've been meaning to do a trip report from that trip  just been really busy of late.
I'll try to get it done over the next couple of days.

P.S Sorry about the hi-jack.

Regards
Mr Turbo

you lucky *******s!
supposedly Subaru is still planning a diesel in the US, but have not released any info as far as i know since late 2008.

Being overseas now and driving an old Land Cruiser with a 3-liter 4-cylinder diesel, I very much hope that Subaru's Boxer Diesel will be available Stateside by the time we get back to the US.

In the US, gas is cheap (for now). But everywhere else in the world, diesel is the only way to go. If you want to buy a US car that will be viable outside the country as well, it better be a diesel. This is especially true of AWD and 4x4, IMO. I'd hate to be one of the people driving a gas-guzzling Hummer, Suburban, or similar boat-like SUV outside the land of cheap gasoline.
