Those who have been to remote parts, how necessary is a sand flag?

Don't have an aerial on the OBW, so would need to fit some sort of mast.

Is there a real risk of being over run by maurauding 'big rigs'? (I figure I should be able to see their dust for kms and their flags when closer.:iconwink:)

i dont know out there, but over here in our sand dunes, a flag is hugely helpful... i have a flag on my 4runner that sits about 11' off the ground when stopped... and there really is no reason to not have one if you drive in the desert very often...

The flags help others see you, especially when driving over the dunes.
Better to be safe than sorry I say.

  • Just a 'C.B.' aerial, or is there a specific (cheaper?) alternative for those of us without 'coms'?
Alternatively:

  • Is it possible to connect an external aerial to the standard radio, to improve reception when remote from stations? (If this is relevant for FM reception.)
Pick the radio nOOb

A decent sized CB aerial will be very expensive. 4wd shops and industrial safety gear suppliers sell sand flags ready to go. A couple of steel offcuts and bolts and it's on the roof:

Since getting that one, I've been thinking it could be done almost as well and much cheaper with a length of orange conduit with a decent size bolt stuck in one end for mounting.

In my experience the Subaru on-glass radio antennae are pretty good, and it wouldn't be worth the hassle of connecting and mounting an external fm antenna.

Yep, necessary if in sand dunes. Otherwise not needed.

Can anyone tell me if the area east of Innaminka /south along the Bore Track to Cameron Corner and west from the Corner via Merty Merty to the Strzelecki Track?

(I suspect the route through Merty Merty does.)

Barry,
Regarding your question about installing a separate antenna for the AM/FM radio, I tried that with one about 6' mounted on my roo bar and it made no difference at all. I think its the sensitivity of the car radio itself as I can get better AM/FM reception with my small transistor radio.
I had a flag on the end of this antenna for a while, but it wobbled around way to much so I bought a $15 bicycle flag and use that instead. When I did the Simpson trip my co driver supplied a "proper" 4WD sand flag but it was a pain to try and store when not in use and also suffered from the wobbles.
I have heard of fishing rod blanks being used as well as pieces of plastic conduit as previously mentioned.

cheers

I stored mine above the interior grab handles attached by cable (zip) ties. No problem!
