This shouldnt be as hard as it is, been struggling on google and dont get much time to visit the shops (Hence online ordering) but does anyone know where I can find a 40mm Recovery Reciever Hitch to suit my Subaxtreme rear bar? They cant help locate one, rather have one on that not seeing as though I dont tow with my bar.

Any ideas?

Websites would rock...

Eden, or whoever knows the answer, rather than cut the tow hitch to fit a hook, would it be safe to just use the tow hitch WITHOUT the ball and attach a bow shackle through the hole for mounting the ball?

Thats what I do. :)
It's the way I've been taught & also the safest. :iconwink:
To secure the snatch strap in place, I just slide/put the pin through the hole that holds the tongue in.

Mr Turbo, I mean to leave in the hitch insert and just take off the ball, with a bow shackle through the hole where the ball 'bolt' fits. (as per photo)

I think using an insert and shackle would be better than just using the pin, but can't see the sense in buying & hauling a second insert if I don't need to. ;)

On cars with a basic towbar (i.e. not Reece hitch), I've done what you describe with a shackle in place of the tow ball, and it works fine. But since you have the pin there, I'd say use it, as it means fewer parts to carry and to possibly fail. A shackle on the end of the tongue won't be any stronger, as all the load ends up going through the pin anyway.

In the Subie club here we use the pin.

Dane.

I can see your logic Dane, however possibly easier to fit the shackle through the tow ball hole rather than muck around under the vehicle extracting and re-inserting the pin - especially if working in mud, not sand. ;)

I have also put the end loop of the snatch strap through the pin but have found that it has slightly bent the centre of the pin. This makes it harder to fit through the towbar hitch insert. Putting a bow shackle through the towball hole would prevent this.

cheers

the hitch i cut was a cheap trailer hitch not from my tow ball. removing the ball might be hard and time consuming. the reason i made this is because its a quick easy swap and fit and you dont need a shackel at my end. just hook it over. a bought two more to put at the front but havent got around to installing them yet. i cant see how you guys get a end of the snatch strap in a 40mm hitch:confused:

I've had to do it a couple of times. :)
It is a little tight I must admit  but it can be done. :iconwink:

i was wondering about bolting or welding a recovery hook to the rhs on the towbar righ that runs along the back of the car. Cause yeh, it's hard getting a strap in there

Benwarn,
If, like me, you don't drive with a tow ball unless you need to tow (the hitch tongue doubles as a 'step' for me to tighten straps at the rear of the roof rack ;)) I would think that use of a properly rated shackle, as per the thumb nail in my earlier post #8, would eliminate the need for welding.
Having recently used my bushranger trax to self-extricate from mud west of Cameron Corner :lildevil: I can see no benefit in 'scrunching' around under the car in mud or snow to set up a 'snatch' when required, as I can just screw in the shackle pin standing at the rear of the car! :p
