i was donw south about a month ago and while a was 4wd i noced that my engine temp was way above normal (at the top 3/4 mark) so a turned the heater on full to draw the heat out, which worked and engine temp went back normal. the same thing happened the next few days but i noticed it only heated up when traveling slowly (going thruogh rock terain and deep ruts and stuf). when travelling back up to perth going 120 km/h it's all good. i thuoght that this problem could be because of **** in the ratiaton and stuf, so when i got home a gave the radator a good hose down and got all the crap out of it.
the other day i was jump starting a car which involved my car being on, going no where for about half and hour, when i hoped in a noticed that engine temp was way up agian, so i turned the heater on and temp went back to normal.

dose anyone know what could be causing this???????

If the fans are working, the easiest and cheapest thing to try is to replace your radiator cap.
The next step would be a thermostat, but I would almost certainly bet my money on the cap (if the fans are working as they should).

yer the fans work fine, i thuoght it might have been the fans so a check and all good. ill get a new radiator cap tomoz and see what that does.
thanks guys

Sounds to me like your thermostat is sticking in or jammed, and not letting the full flow of water to the radiator. The airflow over the engine at highway speeds in the sort of weather we are having in Perth will keep the engine cool enough without much help from the radiator. By turning on the heater, you are rejecting the heat into the cabin instead, which is after the thermostat.

I managed to drive from Willetton to Hay St exit down the freeway with the thermostat jammed solid - it ran warm, but didn't overheat until I had to stop at a set of lights on Murray St.

If you are using 'special' coolant supplied for EJ25 engines built between 98 and 02, it is possible that it has a product akin to Bars Leaks in it to keep the cylinder gaskets from leaking - this has been reported to cause the thermostats to sieze up.....like on my car.

^^^ fair enuogh, you know how to unblock it. i am using tacology 90 so its nothing special

You can check by opening the radiator cap, then starting the car and letting it come up to temperature - you should see the water begin to circulate when the temperature gauge is around one third up.

If it is stuck, it is a matter of replacing. From memory, it is housed where the bottom hose joins the engine block. Anyone confirm?

^ that's correct. Make sure you've got a new gasket as well.

The otherway to monitor coolant flow through the radiator is by feeling the radiator for warmth - start at the top, as the coolant warms up the warmth/heat will flow down to the inlet port of the radiator until the thermo fans kick in.

If the radiator cap doesn't work, idle the motor on the spot and watch it get hot. Check all hoses for a pin hole squirt of water - that could be the problem if you're loosing coolant...

Also, how far has your foz gone, and is the water pump in good condition? The water pump on my EJ was shot - it had only done 127xxxKm and had some serious shaft play and a shot seal... I've got a new one and everything's good so far.

Cheers

doing timing belt and water pump in another 8,000km it's done 178,000. taking it to me machenic tomoz so we will have a look and see what's goiong on

So what's been happening since mid september???

hahahaha yer forgot about this lol.
i had to change me timing belt and drive belts so while we were there changed water pump and flushed out me radiator and its all good now. i think it was the flushing out of radiator that fixed it
