I have taken my family out again. It's been a while since we've been up there, plus we needed to get out a bit. We went up Apex and over Mammoth Gulch to West Magnolia and down 72 to Golden. Just a nice drive in the hills. Mammoth gulch had some snow right pass Apex and down the other side. There was some weather moving in so we've aborted the plans to go check out Kingston (I wanted to bad though). It was snowing at the top so we just continued on down and to West Magnolia. WM was clear. I was quite disappointed with the first hill as it was obvious that a grader has been through it very recently (the bypass on the right). It's been smoothed and packed down, even Smash wouldn't have any problems through it now :p We've cruised through WM in about 30 minutes and continued down 132 to hwy 72 and down to Golden.

This thing looked like it was stuffed. It stayed in this position for about 5 minutes, didn't even move its ears.

Nice picks.

Do you have any sort of communication if something were to go wrong? That is a concern of mine with a young family. If the car craps out I would like to call for help.

I do pack for an emergency.

Interesting observation Subieoutlaw.

In the late '90's My wife and I took our 2 kids, then aged 3 & 8, from Maffra in Gippsland to visit her brother in Dookie in northern Victoria, across the 'Great Divide' from Licola to Jamieson on 'logging roads'. Admittedly, it wasn't winter (as the road is closed in winter) but they have damn all traffic when the log trucks aren't working.
No PLBs / EPIRBs back then, and no mobile ('cell') coverage either.
However, like you we packed for emergencies, and I was reasonably confident I could get the beetle going again if it stopped, whatever the reason! :lildevil:
So long as we could stay warm and dry we would never be in any danger. I knew I could always walk out if I had to.
It seems a bit sad these days that we can be more reticent than we used to be, unless we have all the latest 'techno goodies'.
Safety ultimately relies on knowledge and being able to 'think things through', not on 'fail safe' equipment.
(Having said that, I'm taking GPS and EPIRB to 'The Corner' this time, even though I would've managed without either if I had been going there 10 or 20 years ago.)
Oops, sorry about the thread hijack!

We have our cell phones that are worth crap when out there

Seriously though. I always insist on extra food and water, clothing, tools, straps, and other gear. However, we do not have everything and anything that I've seen on the "emergency lists" in other posts. poop happens, and prevention and knowledge are the keys to surviving it. I always try to let someone know when to expect us back and what general area we'll be in. No, we're not 100% prepared, but not 100% helpless either :iconwink:

very nice. i'm still waitingg for the chance to break mine in up there. taking trips to & driving all over colorady is what made me want a subaru. they outnumber every car out there 10 to 1, & if they can handle the rockies, they can sure handle anything else!
