I've been trying to trouble shoot an CEL for ages and haven't ever been able to male a connection to the ECU.
It started with a OBDII reader.. which I found wouldn't work for the early Foresters ( 11/2000 ) and what followed was a procession of cables and laptops with FreeSSM on them.
Not once have I been able to get more than just a 5Volt ( or thereabouts ) signal.
I've discovered by joining the green wires that it's the knock sensor but it would be nice to sort it.
Anyone got any ideas?

Take it to a workshop with a professional OBDC machine.

It will be able to read OBDC codes, both I (mostly proprietary) & II (standard).

I got freessm connected to 2000 outback (obd1 i believe) using vag com k+ cable. You have to install the driver for the cable. My laptop is in pieces right now so i cant help you with the driver, just google it. The obd2 one works on my wife 03 forester.

Thanks Ratbag .. I know what's wrong with it (still haven't fixed it ) but now it has become an exercise in getting it to work.
Tuckerbag, I have installed the driver .. hence why I am quite confused as to why it won't work. I've tried Linux and Windows ... still no go.

A cheap VAG-com cable from HK worked for me on a '99 JDM legacy RSK.

BUT. The first one I get didn't work.

I had to buy another, making sure it was a FTL232 chipset.

This works fine.

I ll put back the laptop tonight and take some pics.

This is the cable I bought

The driver I installed

This is how it appears in Windows Device Manager

Hope it can help you. BTW i am running Windows 8.

Cheers,

I went through the VAG COM cables and ended up getting the FTL232 chipset and it still didn't work ... hence putting it on the back burner for a few months. I might try those drivers and see if that helps ... not that I have invested a lot of money in it but a lot of time .. and I hate being beaten by technology !
Taza, I read about the aftermarket knock sensors, pretty well everyone spent on a AM one then ended up going OEM.. I will just sack up and do it when I get to it.

thanks guys !
