One thing that can help a lot is replacing all the plastics up front with aluminum. I hit probably wood in deep sand, which ripped a fender liner off, which the tire spun and threw out. Since the fender liner is attached to the front bumper skin, that fell partially off as well.
There is a Canadian company, LP aventure that makes a very nice shield for 2015+ Subarus. Google it. Something like that would be fantastic for sand. In addition, although the entire setup looks too weak for serious rock, it will keep even more gravel out.
That said, I would personally prefer the SubaX bumper but I am not sure of its weight or how it relocates the factory eye-bolt recovery point on Subarus that have one.
