60+ y.o. claw hammer here. It isn't as heavy as all that ...

HC, save weight somewhere else, mate. A hammer is so ubiquitously useful, one shouldn't leave home without one ... ;).

I have that exact hammer, Supa-peg give them away when buy a good quantity of pegs.

Supa-pegs are excellent but the hammers are rubbish.

Just as you called it there's not enough weight to be effective.

want to save weight -- use a rock, back of an axe (if you carry one), etc.

Otherwise.. I find a rubber mallet is handy; it can also be used for other things, like repairs, if required. I find claw hammer heads too small for swinging at tent pegs when my hand is in the way!

Rubber mallet is the go.

Its a PITA being camped somewhere having the clang clang of metal on metal with someone hammering in tent pegs with a hammer.

I disagree. That is part of the soundtrack of camping, just like splitting firewood

my camping soundtrack involves short 'psssht' sounds every half hour or so.
