Does anybody use 27Mhz sideband anymore? I went looking to buy one recently to introduce my son to the 'radio hobby' i enjoyed as a teenager - can't buy one - probably no one listening anyway i suppose.

In the old days, 27meg was all there was. It still has its advanatages when atmospherics help out when you can skip across the country. I once heard a bloke in Alaska.... But I have communicated from Atherton Tablelands to Perth. But it has been a long time since I have used it- I hope some still are. The alternative is amateur which despite their best efforts is still a pain.

I use my 27MHz every now and then, but every time I do, I am reminded why I switched to UHF.

There is, now, that much background noise, that it is increasingly difficult to hear anything and you find that you have the squelch turned right up.

I've skipped a few times. It's a buzz, but the novelty wears off.
