The next morning after camping on top of the dune we headed back east. We took a few detours from the main track which found us exploring some nice Simpson scenery.

Ahh such pleasant driving....makes me want to go back!

Cheers mate.

By the way - Nacha, the antenna works pretty well. I can get signal in places where I shouldn't. We were about 60km from Birdsville but our elevation on the dune helped. We only managed one bar of 3G but that's plenty enough to catch news, weather, do some instagramming and get in touch with family to let them know you are somewhere surreal.

.....and yes! I will definitely be back. Bad flooding stopped us from doing the full Simpson crossing which I've been wanting to do for years.

Here's a bit of red sand. Some digital cheating was used:

On the way back to Birdsville we took the middle track up Big Red just for a bit more of a challenge, I had seen a lot of you guys do it beforehand so I knew it was possible. The first go I didn't quite have enough revs, but 2nd time just flew up.

Nice climb up Big Red ! Did you deflate the tires and did you have any puncture with them ? Wet sand is more homogeny than dry sand but a Subie climbs anyway !

I had the tyres around 20 psi. Anything higher is quite uncomfortable and there is still option to go lower if we hit somewhere slippery. Fuel economy was 14 l / 100 km on the sand dunes which is great considering only the lowest gears are used. With the largest dunes on the eastern end, I imagine economy would improve once the big dunes are out of the way.

Not a single puncture. Not even a mark. The tyres still look new.

Hehe yeh, revs are your friend .

That antenna is a good idea.

Big Red is pretty amazing! Trying to work out that track up Big Red, is that on the Birdsville side?

No not the Birdsville side, we were heading west to east towards Birdsville. You'd probably remember the easiest track (ie: the one with the left hander at the end) was on your right as you approach Big Red. The one in the video was the track two to the left of that one - making it pretty much the middle track.

Dunno about economy improving further west -- I recall there are fewer big dunes, but they're more frequent, and there are fewer large swales between them.. tends to be more up and down dune driving in places.
