ICE, In Case of Emergency I've been doing this for years, and meaning to post it for a long time now, I think it's a pretty wise idea. Considering the things we do, and the places we are heading out to, make sure folks can find the right folks to contact, should God forbid, anything happen. Only takes a few minutes, so PLEASE take the time.

Thanks,

A very good idea indeed. I see (if I read it correctly) that it's also available here down under in Australia. I must have a closer look into this.
Thanks for the link Carljwnc.

Funny you post this now...

one of the current headline news items is about a boy who died while bushwalking on the outskirts of Sydney. He called the emergency services (000 our version of 911) several times and still died. The emergency phone service has been criticised for poor handling, asking him for his address, not passing on important information and one some calls treating him as though it was a joke.

It is quite possible to get into trouble in an area with phone reception.
I would still suggest calls to 000 - but make it clear if it is serious and that you arent in a suburban area. As hard as it can be, you need to remain calm, the people on the other end arent always going to be the best!

^^ this is more about paramedics getting information from family and friends from your your cell phone when you unconsious rather than calling for help. its a great idea i think. could save a lot of time in emergency

could save a lot of time in emergency

Too right mate! In a medical emergency time is of the essence!

I also like the idea of having a sticker that tells the emergency personel about it.

I personally, have a sealed envelope that is kept in the glove box of my Forry which has my medical info in it (alergies, blood type, etc) & who to contact in case of emergency.

Perhaps I should put a sticker somewhere that tells them its in there.

I like the idea of a sticker, and your idea of an envelope in the glove box. I didn't read far enough into the link I posted above. I really don't see any need to pay anyone for anything related to this, I just wanted for folks to see the idea. All you need to do is program the acronym ICE next to the phone numbers you want contacted in the event of an emergency.
Example:
My home phone # ICE 1
Wife's cell # ICE 2
Parents # ICE 3

Wikipedia Link which also tells how you can get free stickers and cards at least in the US.

This drove a big feature here in the USA, with GPS tracking. There was an Amtrack train crash not too far out side of NYC (20-30 miles maybe) in the swampy area of NJ. A swing bridge caused a major derailment. This happenend on a clear day. It's just a section of track that no one pays attention to as it is the between NY penn station and the first stop in New Jersey. 911 got many many calls about the accident from people on the train, but they did not know where they were, what happened (no real visiual landmarks), so the response was greatly delayed. this was before 9/11.
After this there was a big push to get GPS functions in phones available to assist 911 emergencies. And check to see if your phone has GPS tracking on it and turn it on before you go hiking, or if its a childs or other "geographically impared" person have it turned on for them.
Mom is 80, thats why i got her a cell phone. She doesnt know how to use 90% of the features, but I have peace of mind.

In Australia, it's important to dial 112 from a mobile phone and NOT 000.

Carl,
What is it exactly that you do?
Have a listing in your phone numbers that is called ICE with contact details for a relative?
The web link just seems to be to a US commercial site.

No not a separate listing, in your phonebook just put ICE after the contact name. For instance; I have my home phone # as "Home ICE 1", my wifes cell # as "Laurie Cell ICE 2" so as long as they can find your working phone, they can go through the phonebook and call those numbers.

Yeah, that is a commercial web site, but they do explain it pretty well which is why I posted it. Another tip I found just now while poking around in there, DO NOT have your phonebook password protected, or else it's a wasted effort.

My understanding as to the 'correct' usage is to have the phonebook entries starting with "ICE" so that they come up immediately.

I am very much taken with Mr T's suggestion about the envelope in the glove box. Bit like the permanent instruction I have from my Doctor about which hospital the Ambos should take me to. No point going to the wrong hospital, where my Specialists aren't ...
I will implement this today.

As for notifying them of its existence. How about a piece of card in the holder on the back of the driver's sun visor? If down, it will be visible from inside the car; if up, it will be visible from outside the car. Just a thought or two.

I have also thought about the sense of having a GPS beacon, and/or a satellite phone, if really going bush.

AND REMEMBER everyone - ALWAYS stay with your vehicle. A vehicle is far easier to see in the landscape than a prone body ...

I also carry a large sheet of yellow plastic with me. It will do double duty as a water catchment trap, and also is even easier to spot than your vehicle.
If someone doesn't already know how to construct a water trap, please feel free to ask. It could save your life.

I be interested in that :)
I seem to remember doing something like that when I was at school. But that was a long time ago

You need three things basically:
A trenching tool or similar;
An ice cream container or similar; and
A sheet of plastic about a metre on each side.

  1. Scoop out a shallow depression in the ground.
  2. Place a reasonable quantity of water bearing foliage into this depression.
  3. Place container in the centre of the depression.
  4. Place plastic over the top, holding each corner in place with either a convenient rock, or a few handfuls of soil, if rocks are scarce ...
  5. Place any convenient weight object in the middle of the plastic above the container underneath. This causes the condensate to run down the underneath of the plastic sheet into the container ...
  6. The hotter the day, the more the water collected. Don't use it for having a shower :lildevil:.
Hope this is complete ... It does work.
BTW, I have done the glove box letter you suggested for both our cars.

Can I add urinate on the foliage (NOT in the container!) It might sound a bit gross but will have no effect on the water quality in the container but will add to the volume. Or you can use bog water or river water if undrinkable. If in really dire straits, this method can be used to distill coolant. Basically anything with water in it! :iconwink:

Also I would say if you seal all around the plastic sheet it will seal in the moisture & prevent evaporation, increasing yield. Best way is to use sand or soil.

ICE Android app.

iceimage-238x116.png

https://www.xda-developers.com/android/i-c-e-card-just-in-case/

The application effectively acts as a digital copy of the traditional ICE card which is stored on your phone. It contains all the relevant information that you’d expect it to.
  • Your Name
  • Three Emergency Contacts
  • Blood Type
  • Information Regarding Allergies / Medical Conditions
Unfortunately, accidents do happen and while I wouldn’t go so far as to say that this app should replace a hard copy ICE card it will certainly increase the chances of that all important information being relayed to the right person.
The latest version is available for free on the market and is now ICS friendly, you can find more infomation in the original thread...

Just a grab a plastic bag, some scissors, and some duct tape. Find a near tree with green leaves and stuff as many of the leaves in to the plastic bag but do this carefully no to damage the leaves or the branches.

The trick is to get the water from the plant proper not just the leaves.

Seal the plastic bag with the duct tape and leave it for a few hours (leave it overnight if you can).

Give the bag good shake to get the drops to fall to the bottom.

== pure distilled water!
