Jack's Journey, another Poverty Pack

Q2u5UhN (2).jpg
Jack is a one owner since new (me!) SG MY04 Forester X.
He's served us well over the years, mostly as a daily driver for SWMBO with a few camping trips towing a 7'x4' light off road camper trailer as well as board carrier and shuttle bus for the kids.
The last 18 months He's been reduced to Camper Trailer puller & Mal/Nipper (surf lifesaving) board carrier.
About 8 months back, SWMBO started raising discussions about trading Jack in on "Something Else" to the value of about $15 - 20ksecond hand, hiluxy sort of thing as she felt Jack was getting a little worn out.
This was to be used predominantly as a shuttlebus, camper trailer tower & board carrier mind you, but with a view to more adventurous touring..

With a little bit of effort, I managed to convince her that Jack was not in fact terribly worn out (backed up by the mechanic thankfully) but just needed a bit of a spruce up.

And thus the journey begins..

Sure as most lifted subarus do have. It would habe now more then no lifted grand sherokee or nissan patrol. I would too. Like new 4runner have 9.6" gc. So that forester should have 10" easy. I have little over 10" about 26cm

Put some clear combo filters on the 240s. and went for a drive last night..
Bloody awesome. Enough spread so that I don't feel the need for any more forward lighting and hasn't reduced the throw significantly.

Still not sure if they would be as good as the Super Oscar, but their a fraction of the weight.

Must take some pics, could do a comparison of the 'combo cover', 'spot cover', High and Low beams.

I should have taken some last night, but it was just too nice a night driving to stop and take pictures with a s&*tty phone

About 30cm (almost 12")

Cool. My highest part is rear diff about 28cm there. Front akid plate maybe 26cm. Your should be different too front and rear no?

10" of real life clearance is great. Forget all those 8.7, 9.6, 10.0 numbers from marketing materials. They only apply on the dealer's lot--if that.

On all the models with 8.7" of clearance (all 2010+ utility Subarus) you get about 8.5" of real life ground clearance to the front and transmission skid plates with 1" total lift and you get 10" with the excellent SLOz 2" lift kit and 0.5" from 1" oversize tires. Skid plates lose you at least 0.5" and all tires lose diameter quickly. Hence PR numbers are irrelevant.

In my experience, there is a big difference between 8.5 and 10.

Due to the exhaust, the clearance in front of the edge of the front wheels is the same as between the wheels which is a big drawback with any Subaru skid plates.

Ironically, I am now back to 8.5" of real life clearance on the 4Runner (9.6" nominal with stock plates but even that is not true; the lowest point of the engine stock skid was at 9.25" on a vehicle with 12 miles). The difference in that respect is that I have 10.5" in front of the wheels and the skids are 3/16" steel and I can jack the truck off the engine skid plate, even between crossmembers. By contrast, the SUbaru skid plates cannot take hard hits. And, of course, compared to my OB with a 2.5" total lift, I have 10 more degrees of AA, 6 more degrees of DA, and 5" more clearance at rocker panel without any lift. I also have stock size AT tires, I did not go up after ditching the stock tires at 1 week (right, Rally?).

The rear differential ground clearance is only 8.5" to skid plate with a 2" lift/2" drop and a 1" larger tire but that never was an issue.

Threw some paint around yesterday:

I think it's not too bad. Needs a bit of a sand and another coat though.
Masking off the lettering was the trickiest bit.

Quick Update:

The bed liner is holding up very well. I think the trick is more coats, also roughing up the plastic a bit gives it better grip. Thoroughly recommend it.

On the not so good front appears to be leaking a bit more oil than it used to, trying to track down where it's coming from is proving to be a lot harder than I thought. I think I'm going to have to do the rocker cover seals sooner than later,
I'm worried that it might be something more than that.. the oil appers to be coming down LH the mount onto the crossmember thingy and dripping out at the lowest point. It's quite clean..

Not enough to require topping up with oil since lasst service, about 2,500kms ago (normally oil change every 5000kms ).

Just seems to be more of it coming out. got it booked into the mechanic on monday for a look. Did notice a bit of oil on what looks like a seal on the rear end of the rocker cover.

I know nothing about subaru engines. They might look a bit like a beetle engine but that's about it (except for the EG and H6 which look more like a porsche.).

so how it looks now ? i mean car with that bed liner ? so um its not that super hard surface where you can scratch it with screwdriver and nothing will happen ? so like hard logs in bush might still scratch it , what you think ?

The stuff I've used is literally called 'Bed Liner' but it's not that super hard stuff, it's meant to be quite flexible.
Haven't noticed any chips or anything and haven't hit anything to test it. :iconwink:

It's stuck a lot bettter now over time than it did originally certainly not peeling if you give it a bit of a jab with a screwdriver. I reckon if you threw on another single coat every month or so and ended putting 3 or so coats on it it you'd end up with something pretty resistant.
It's not line-ex, but it's great value for money.

The paint specialist I went to poo-pooed the idea of me using it on the guards, said it would come right off due to the plastic. So did the auto spray painter I spoke to about it. They're wrong.

Headlight happy snaps, taken with phone coz I couldn't figure out how to take proper pics in the dark with the proper camera.

When I'm next out of town on a decent bit of straight flat road at night I'll try and get some better ones, because the phone doesn't do it justice and the bit of road was too short.

I think I've got to tilt the LH spot up a bit too, it's a little low.
What surprised me when looking at the spotties from the front was that the spotties didn't look that much brighter than the high beam. I didn't stand in front of them though.

One heck of a difference from behind them though.

Happy Snap time, had the tinting redone, partly covered under warranty so saved a few dollars there:
