We are taking the Mereenie Loop from Kings Canyon to Glen Helen in June.
One of the must dos on the way is Goose Bluff Crater.
I have read conflicting reports of how bad the road in is. In one post I read a 2 wheel drive could do it at pinch in the right conditions.
Official advice is "A four-wheel drive (4WD) vehicle is needed for the last 10km into the reserve".
How do you think a 2016 Forester with Bridgestone AT397 will go - would it be OK - or better give it a miss?

I don't know the AT397, is it similar to the 697 Dueller?

What size tyres?
How much lift?
Bash plates?

With the right prep, I have no doubt your SJ Forester with bigger ATs, a 2" lift & bash plates could do it easily, even in poor condition. You'd be surprised what our Subies are capable of, esp with XMode

Hi John I drove in there in a standard 2015 outback with OEM tyres 2 years ago. It is a very interesting area . The road is a bit lumpy in places and certainly has some clearance challenges. The track is flat and stony. I wouldnt call it a 4wd track though.
