Snow Trip - Rawson on Saturday August 14.

Beigewagon,
Checking for the AEC that the bundles have the correct number, I presume.
Does that make you a Booth Returning Officer / DRO?
I was a poll clerk, state and federal, for many years, as was my dad before me - and my brother still is at the southern end of your seat .
These days I am really saddened to see so many young poll clerks who dress slovenly and really seem ignorant of any but the most basic aspect of the task. (oops, didn't mean to rant!)
If you are responsible for taking the ballots back to the Electoral Office at least you can be confident that the Beigewagon will get through, irrespective of snow or sleet! :discomonkey:
For the past 30 years I have 'crossed over' and spend my time handing out how-to-vote cards and scrutineering. (BTW, the last time I was in Rawson was election day 1999. Didn't know a soul, unlike everyone else doing how-to-votes.
By the end of the night however my candidate had won the booth, and the seat.
I thought it was an interesting outcome, in terms of how all the friendly familiar faces had no effect whatsoever on how their neighbours voted.)
Apologies for going off-topic.

Hey guys.. how did you guys go - is there a trip report coming?
Cheers
AP

I learned that I really should go offroading with an un-lifted vehicle.

Almost lost my front bumper and ripped out the inner left wheel arch guard.

Lengthed a pre-existing tear in the rear bumper when it tried to grade the final exciting part of the day where I found a hole... a BIG hole... I'm sure photos will be forth coming.

Most of us attempted a decent hill climb in there - I'm not sure if any unlifted vehicles made it through in the end?

No snow unfortunately... Hey Venom and El_Freddo, how was sunday????

Cheers,
Owen.

lift or no lift deep holes is deep holes....!

...and even so called 'real 4x4s' can get stuck in the same bog hole and sometimes there's only a Subaru available to snatch the out:yourock::yourock:

I broke away from the group at he mud hole and headed for Mount Selma and to link up with a family group also enjoying the Victorian High Country that weekend, and hoping for a peaceful night snow camping. However the weather report was for northerly gale force winds in alpine areas so we were forced to search for shelter in gullies on the lee side of the ranges. Our refuge was on Fiddlers Green Road beneath Mt Singleton. However due to the steepness of the terrain there was no flat ground to be found anywhere so with dark looming we 'circled the wagons' and camped on the road and braced ourselves for a wild night. The sound and light show above and the accompanying rain periodically disturbed our sleep but at least we were well protected from the wind. El Freddo and Venom were planning to camp at Coopers Creek south of Walhalla - i wonder how the night was for them??

This area was burnt in 2003 or 2006 i think (help Beigewagon?) the Mountain Ash trees are all dead and the gully felt like a cemetery, there were telegraph poles as far as you could see.... and the noise of the wind blowing thru them poles that night was really erie! There is significant re-growth as you can see in this photo of the Forrie making it's way back to the main road and on to Matlock for breakfast in the Public Shelter. The wind chill was was -10C. bloody cold mate!!

Don't I know it! My lib had a 3" lift and it was beasty! I can't transfer that lift into this car though (had it ready to go too!) as the strut lift blocks do not match the BCD pattern in the OB body... so I need to get new strut tops fab'd up and then we'll be rockin out with a lift kit :D

Oooh awsome!!!! bugger missed out the fun eh.. nah no way non-lifted subaru wouldnt make it - my liberty would've tore the bumper out too... (ive already damaged my drivers side's plastic wheel arch 2 weekend ago after driving along the railway line in werribee)

Bugger! I forgot about that...

I am not sure if you could knock out & re-dril 2 holes in? just a thought.

It was a good weekend! Thanks to BeigeWagon for organising Saturday. I'll do a brief report for Friday night and Sunday. Pictures to come (need to get them from Subaruby and Bennie).

Bennie and i campled out in Walhalla on the Friday night. Always interesting setting up camp in the dark, especially when trying to light a fire with damp wood. Oil and petrol may have been involved :D Unbeknownst to me i set up my swag next to a pile of rubbish.

Saturday night Subaruby, Bennie and myself camped out at Walhalla. This time with dry firewood from the Rawson servo so we were nice and toasty infront of a good fire. Sunday morning we started off on the road north out of Walhalla looking for some tracks, most of which were closed. We ended up heading down a fairly extreme logging track. Definitely not the graded type. Main obstacles were piles of dirt accross the track, sort of like a rough and ready version ofwater bars you find on some roads.

My Liberty ended up shrouded in clutch smoke a couple of times. Good excuse to start organising a dual range box  The exit from that logging track was across a pile of logs and stumps covered in a thin layer of dirt.

We headed back into Walhalla and found a dead-end track just behind the town. It was a little too slippery and the ruts too big for Bennie with his smaller snow tyres on. We turned around and headed up the old coach road out of Walhalla, pretty easy going except for a brief tyre change for Bennie.

We followed a track down to the Thompson river were we did a bit of debating about wether or not to cross. I did the first crossing, which was really easy. We stopped on the island in the middle before Subaruby took the plunge accross the second much deeper crossing. Fairly straight forward except for some large rocks under the water. I think this was the first water crossing for all 3 of us and it was exhilirating to say the least :iconwink: Fear of been swept away or stuck in the middle of the crossing had us all a bit nervous. In the end it was pretty easy and i was really happy we had decided to do it.

All in all it was a fun weekend. It was great to meet the members of the Subaru 4WD on Saturday. There were some great looking very well setup cars, and of course more friendly Subaru drivers. Yet again i am just looking forward to the next trip as i really enjoy these outtings!

Cheers,
Rhys

Hehehe... The rubbish tip. The campsite on Saturday night was the Hilton compared to Friday's! Funny thing was that the hilton was across the carpark from the tip...

I've got some pics I'm trying to upload... its been a very painful process!

TGM - I was disappointed that you didn't make it for Sunday but after seeing what we got up to I am kinda glad you didn't come as you would have bent your new subi...

Are we getting a trip report sorted or just posting pics in here?

Cheers

Bennie
