I am going to propose a Walhalla trip on either the weekend of 27-28 of August or the 3-4 of September. Short notice but i don't want to leave it too late in Sept because it's getting close to the desert trip. Walhalla is about 2.5 to 3 hours from Melbourne, north of Moe. The area east of Walhalla and the Thompson river is rich with mining history. There are a number of deserted towns and mines to explore in the region. The area is also very well known as a popular 4WD destination, with a **** load of tracks in the area which should be a great challenge and fun experience.

Plan at this stage would be a Friday camp in Walhalla (free), dinner at the pub (cheap, amazing food).

Saturday morning explore tracks around walhalla, cross the Thompson river into the Walhalla east /Aberfeldy region and continue exploring. i might find some camps on the net for Sat night or more likely find something as we go.

Sun morning continue exploring the area east of the Thompson, head back over the river before dark and depart from there. Possibley tea and some brews at the pub for those with a bit more time to get back http://www.ausubaru.com/forum/images/smilies/icon_biggrin.gif

The river crossing is risky. It's very rocky (Bennies fuel tank can attest to that http://www.ausubaru.com/forum/images/smilies/icon_biggrin.gif), the approach and departure sites can be steep and of course there is always the risk of hydrolocking or flooding your car. No need for snorkels, but i think you definitely want to bypass the ingaurd intake to be confident of crossing. The water shouldn't be much higher than the bottom of say the doors on my car, but these things are never certain. FUN!

I'm wary of tackling any challenging stuff without atleast one hand winch in the group, so if someone could arrange something that would be good.

Of course all of this is pointless if no one is interested, so hands up http://www.ausubaru.com/forum/images/smilies/icon_twisted.gif Pick a date that suits you too (or feel free to propose an alternative date), and if you're flexible for either then let me know.

Passengers welcome if you don't want to take your own car!

Cheers,

Rhys

Rhys,

Bummer! Would love to come along, but 27 Aug I will be at a wedding, and the following weekend, I will be on my wasy across the Nulabor with the Cub camper behind the L-Series.

Which crossing of the Thompson are you thinking of? Coopers Creek is do able but can be deeper than expected at this time, especially with recent rain and snow melt.

Brunton Bridge was ok last time I went there (A few years ago) not sure about it now.

The crossing just below the Thompson wall (The name escapes me at the moment) is usually longer and shallower then the others.

I was at Brunton bridge a few weeks ago and it looked doable when i watched a 'real' 4WD cross it. That was the first crossing i was considering for Sat morning. There's another further down river that Elfreddo, Subaruby and myself did after the vic suby club trip from Rawson. Thats near the river diversion tunnel and it was that crossing i was considering for the way back.

If the crossings are too deep then we'll probably head up to the dam and cross there.

Good luck on the Nulabor!

Possibility, and if I'm there I'll bring a winch. TBH would rather be heading across the Nullarbor with beigewagon :lildevil: Loved that.

Rich: don't be afraid to ask for Nullarbor tips. I've got plenty.

If the river crossing is going to exclude anyone then i'm happy to organise the trip to accomodate it. We'll just cross at the dam, and when we come to river crossings those who want to try it can go accross and then come back to continue on with the whole group.

OK well 17-18 of September is looking good for Subaruby and El Freddo. I'm leaning towards this as well.

Just out of interested the Thompson River is flooding at the moment, which could make things interesting.

Meeting point for Friday night is the camp ground just north of Walhalla about 2 mins past the Star Hotel on the eastern side of the road.

Myself and Bennie will be camping out Friday night.

Anyone interesting in arriving Saturday morning then meet up with us at the same campground as described above, plan is to get away by around 10am or earlier if possible.

If anyone else decides to come along i will be at the camp ground from about 4-5pm. From 6pm we will be at the pub, we'll be at one of those two places anyway. Meeting point Saturday morning is the camp ground north of town about 1km past the Star Hotel, we will be heading off from the about 9.30am ish. If you hit the dirt road you have gone too far.

I can be contacted on 0409 006 559, we will have UHF on hand and be using channel 32.

Would love to come but just can't fit it in this weekend. Big chance to make the desert trip though.

New pads, rotors and front calipers - something I've been meaning to do for ages, I've had the parts in the back of the car doing nothing. The calipers on the front had shot dust boots, the left hand side didn't have one as I had to remove the piston to clear out the dust and crap so the piston would release the brake properly. So new O rings and dust seals were installed on a second set of calipers from a road going L series.

I'm pretty sure that the front rotors were the originals - they were super thin compared to the new units. Then I found out that the pads I had were the incorrect ones - so Subaruby went on a mission to find a set for me, which he did.

The brakes have never felt so good. Now to swap the rear discs for new rotors and pads, then I'll be looking into braided lines and a new master cylinder to bring the braking system up to as new if not a little better.

She's not dead yet!

Cheers

Bennie
